Have been out between showers to do some gardening. Dead headed some roses and iris, and a spot of weeding. While out saw the first flower on a new clematis, which is nice but puzzling, as its supposed to be white ( I put two in and I remember one was the president which I think is the deep purple one but can't find the tags to check the others name 🙄) but it is pretty.
Saw the forecast is for blustery winds tomorrow and Saturday (it is June, isn't it ?), so moved the dahlias l still haven't potted into their final pots back into the greenhouse. Potted up 2, "Edge of Joy" and the overwintered "Bishop of Canterbury" and potted up 2 penstemon "Geoff Hamilton" that arrived from Barnsdale this morning.
Just pottered around gently (I seem to do a lot of that!), deadheaded roses and cut off the flowering stalks of bearded irises. Tidied up a bit and watered a few pots (we did have some rain yesterday but not enough). Pulled up the forget-me-knots and threw them on the neglected verge outside the fence. Then I put a big bag of uncompostable bamboo leaves/chopped up thin canes on the outside entrance to a new garden gate (it gets a bit muddy there in heavy rain). Might put old paving stones down there when I can lay my hands on some.
I was suspicious of the hot spell in May, as the last three times its happened June is not as warm as could be. So two days of rain, and a forecast of mid teens temp for the rest of the month should not be a surprise. 🙄
Added more gravel to the pond beach area, this project has been quite a success and we found our 1st adult diving beetle tonight. More success with our new neighbours I popped round after they cut the big hedge today, I asked if they'd leave it till birds fledge they were fine about it. I then managed to beg all the hedge trimmings for my compost, they dutifully mowed it all up and dropped it over the back fence for me to collect. All feed for the compost and as the hedge is a good 50yard long and 10-12ft high it's a lot of gear 😀😀
Only had time to cut up all my kitchen scraps and fiddle around with the compost heap. Been an intense work week so far. Glad it’s this week and not when it’s sunny when I want to be out in the garden. Wish I had set up some water butts already but it’s on the long list at the moment.
Annoyingly a friend has got us tickets for Kew this Sunday which is lovely, but it will be raining all day from the look of things.
I never thought I was a bamboo type person but I’ve found one I really like called Himalayacalamus (Arundinaria) falconeri and I’m trying to figure out where in my garden it could go one day. It’s a weeping bamboo and the foliage looks beautiful.its probably way too big and as it will grow higher than my wall will get strong midday sun which it will not like. Note to self find plants that will actually like my garden.
Lovely neighbour gave me 2 pairs of showa gloves that I was desperately in need of and I hadn’t even asked! I’ve been walking around the house like lady Macbeth, rubbing my hands with cream. So pleased as my current ones had holes in the finger tips! 😁
Sorry it’s a long one I’ve been so busy at work I’ve not really been in the garden so mostly just been thinking about it!
Glad everyone’s gardens have had some rain sorry @Mary370 your time will come!
No gardening for me today ( except feeding toms in the greenhouse) as hubby is home for our anniversary ( will be cooking him steak and scallops tonight) so lazy day for us.😀

After that it was mostly deadheading and soul searching.
