Don't get me started on the appalling random decisions from our local councils! Living in mid-Devon, we see a lot of wasted resources and indefensible decisions - especially when it comes to the homeless etc. We can but do our best: involve our local councillors, and respond positively to those "on the street". We can rail against the tide: we can only do what helps. Even buying The Big Issue is a step towards helping those who need our help. Giving without making judgements to those on the streets, helps. Caring matters.
Has anyone ever become a councillor/MP for the greater good or just to further their own agenda/ boost their own egos/ cover up their own shortcomigs? I think not. Look at the fiasco in Westminster right now!!!!
I feel I must leap [ or at least rise slowly ] to defend some of our MPs. There are a few highly committed individuals, who work tirelessly for their constituents. Sadly they seem less in evidence than the gravy train riders.
How can you lie there and think of England When you don't even know who's in the team
I was a parish councillor for a couple of years. Parish councillors are volunteers - it's essentially community work. But the assumption that councillors must be 'in it for themselves' is pervasive and ultimately destructive. I got fed up with being harangued about all the tax payers money I was getting paid and the blank refusal to accept that I wasn't being paid at all for all the hours of (pretty tedious) work. You may think spending an hour talking about the best locations for dog poo bins is fun. I don't.
It's a thankless task and the common tendency of casually dismissing all councillors as corrupt makes it that much harder. I blame MPs as a body for that - the expenses scandal a few years ago dealt a severe blow to the reputations of a lot of decent people working hard for their communities with no reward or return of any kind.

Another hanging basket bracket has rusted out. I'm always amazed at how bad the metal is under the coating and how quickly they go bad. It looks fine when you take the baskets down for the winter and then the whole thing cracks open to show layers of flaky rust underneath by the spring. I'll be investing in galvanised ones this time around I think.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Sadly many more who should be committed! With regard to parish councillors I agree many of them are there in an effort to do what they can for their community. There are also those on a power trip who think, because they are councillors, they have more right to an opinion than the rest of the community.
