The posts about all things medical reminded me that I'd had a letter about going for my 'annual check' because I'm on blood pressure tablets. This is the first 'annual check' letter I've had despite being on the tablets for about 10 years and rarely going to see my GP. Tried phoning several times and just get the engaged tone. Finally get through to be told I'm 17th in the queue. No wonder I've got high blood pressure!
Aargh. The gas men aren't allowed to replace the above-ground gas main behind the houses (health & safety). They will dig up the road in front of us and bury the new main, and we'll all have a meter box on the front wall. Fine... but all the gas connections and the old meters are in the kitchen, on the back of the house. "Don't worry, we'll run the new gas pipes under the floorboards." All the houses have concrete floors...

Something tells me this could take a while Liri. Presumably someone has told them the floors are concrete? If they go ahead l'm guessing the residents would have to move out while they dig their way through the ground floor from front to back....
Maybe they mean they'll run it under the upstairs floorboards?
Builders next door are cutting concrete blocks today. Non-stop disc cutter noise right outside my window for hours. They've covered everything in dust, cars, windows, basically any flat surface within 20 metres or more, we can't put the washing out either. The only plus point is they've agreed to cut a couple of slabs for my driveway which I've needed to sort out for a while.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
We'd love solar panels, Obelixx, but we face NE, and the SW side is built into a steep hillside with trees cutting out most of the sunlight. We had them installed in the 1980s on our house in Northumberland, and will do so again, I hope, when we eventually move. Mains gas is far cheaper than bottled.
Hopefully a solution will be found, AnniD. I rather think they're hoping we won't mind having gas pipes run along the skirting boards. They are wrong...

That's a thought, WE... only trouble is, our house used to be 2 back-to-back. The floors are at different heights, and there's a stone wall up the middle.

Sounds similar to the valleys housing around here. I've seen gas pipes going up the front wall into the roof space and back down the wall at the back. They've probably had to tackle trickier jobs in the past. Just make sure they verify the routes from all angles before they start. I've had BT installers drill through the wall here and clip the incoming gas main. He also only just missed my water butt which would have been more annoying to me.
