The more recent generations have assumed they could control most of their lives, but it’s not many generations ago when no one expected much control ... we’re going to have to get used to it.

We, who've been around for long enough, do know that life is transient, and there's no "control" over that; but, it's the invisibility of this particularly lethal enemy that makes me so fearful and anxious about my entire family, myself, my friends and neighbours. I can tell myself, "when my number comes up..." but I can't even begin to think like that about my children and grandchildren.
That's exactly how I, and probably the majority of people, feel too, Phaidra. It's hard to bear. My daughter, just like yours, is a doctor and my heart is aching for her every minute of the day. You and I are retired, so we can try to avoid meeting others. Clinicians can't.
