@Fairygirl is the Welsh language dying out? Is it taught in schools? Maybe it is like the Irish language, taught in schools but never really spoken in daily life unless you live in the Gaeltacht, where Irish speaking communities live. Although there has been a resurgance of the language as we now have Irish speaking preschools, and a couple of secondary schools which teach all subjects in Irish.
Obs - I believe the normal advice is to stay put, because a fire should be contained if all the fire regs are in place. I heard someone on the radio going through the list of things which weren't in place. Basic measures ignored. It was terrifying. The firefighters had no way of knowing those measures weren't in place. The cladding suitable for a building that height was far more expensive. Clearly a case of serious costcutting. I don't what other conclusion anyone could arrive at. Those poor people were sitting targets. Joyce - I don't know about squirrels attacking them. Is there any other predator you might have hanging around? Or could it be traffic

Can't think what the reason might be Joyce. I didn't think squirrels would bother them, but maybe they do Reading the online Scottish news [while waiting for someone to speak to me re car insurance ] and thought some of you might like this cheery little item. Unbearably cute
@Joyce21 - I am not sure of the latest ‘figures’ about speaking Welsh, but I understand that only about 11% of people living in Wales can speak Welsh fluently (a decline) but there is an increase in numbers who can speak some Welsh. In fact, there seems to be a ‘trendy’ factor to being able to speak some Welsh. In a work or social setting, you could feel awkward if you can’t join in the Welsh conversations. It is taught in schools in Wales, to different levels of advancement, and there are some schools which are wholly Welsh-speaking. Of those who can speak Welsh, there are many variations in how frequently they do - ranging from rarely to always. Of course, all officially documents, sign posts etc are delivered in dual language, despite nearly all (or even more) being able to read and speak English. Crumbs - I went on a bit then - sorry! I was thinking that myself Hhog They only need to bring this and they're sorted.... Sorry Mary - I missed your post. My understanding is that Welsh is taught in schools, but it's also spoken widely in day to day life. We don't do that in Scotland, except in the north - and even then it's not widely used. Road signs are in both languages, as they are here when you get further north. I think it's sad if we can't proudly use and show the beautiful things that define us, and our separate countries, while still holding on to all those things that are the same and hold all four countries together.

FG - there had been a fire in London 5 years before where the advice was to stay put but the fire didn't behave as expected because of cladding and other factors so that turned out to be wrong advice. The Fire Brigade was given no info on the cladding used in Grenfell and others like it and it seems there's no way to stop a fire in this material once it gets going. Similar fires have occurred in Australia, Russia and the United Arab Emirates. You have to wonder why this wasn't known or, if known, not acted upon.
It's another case of non-communication between professionals and services and also cost cutting on the part of councils, builders, housing managers etc. I always thought any public building building had to have a fire safety certificate and regular visits to makes sure exits are not blocked, safety lights work and regular fire drills. Clearly not.
Dancing was good tonight but hard work. Early night tonight cos the tiler's coming at 8am. Yikes!

I nodded off while Hubby was watching Masterchef. It was the episode where there were cooking for a military establishment - can’t remember which one. Before that, we had Tony Robinson explaining Australian history and explaining why we are the way we are 😳😂😂😂😂. Sometimes I wonder! I think he should have stuck to archaeology.

Like many other things the Grenfell tragedy will be mainly down to cost cutting.
