It does seem a bit pointless setting aside the space for compost all year if all you can use it for is a spring or autumn mulch.

You can put it on the ground whenever you like, anytime, it’s just that we’ve usually got the garden full of plants at other times so winter is a convenient time.
I always put a bucket full down a planting hole when planting out, chopped in with the soil you’ve dug out.

I had to stop the undergardener from dumping stuff in the council bin. Once it's gone, it's gone. I don't like the idea of buying council compost as you don't know what's in it. At least my weeds are my own(nothing pernicious) and I know what to expect

Monty buys in compost from his local council by the tipper truck load, he showed that on a previous programme.
I asked our council but they said they’d had so many complaints because of weeds in it so they only use it on municipal gardens. They obviously don’t get it as hot as people think.

I don't use it any more. It usually stinks of burnt plastic as there's so much plastic rubbish in it.

Do people know that some councils offer a discounted compost bin/ thing, here, many different types:

  • i think MD is a positive influencer i would not be into gardening as much as i am if it wasn’t for him and watching reruns after my operation. he’s always jolly and doesn’t give one way he looks at it from all perspectives i personally like to buy my compost from a guy who does it on a larger scale but it’s interesting to know ( for me anyway) the process for it and if i were to start making my own compost i would take his advice - please no negativity i’m sure we all have our own ways and simply hearing another persons way is not damaging anybody or your way of doing things + he has an hour to fill on the show

An hour is not a long time and the possibilities for topics to cover in garden are endless so there is no room for "filler" items.   MD explained his composting system very well.  A better producer would have made sure he also covered methods and systems available and practical for people with smaller gardens and thus less space and less compostable material.

Pretty much every forth programme covers composting - basic and advanced.
