Can I be curmudgeonly about LOL? If a statement is funny why do I need to be told to laugh out loud? And if it’s not funny why would I laugh out loud? For me a simple exclamation mark suffices to indicate that a quip was being made. Mind you, a friend of mine is convinced LOL means lots of love ... sorry to hear your grandfather died. LOL, Jenny. For what it’s worth I saw no reason to take offence at the sarkiness of Brummies comment. It was obviously said good humouredly.

On the matter of predictive text, someone from our Italian class recently tried to wish us buon Natale. It came out as bionic Natalie.

Predictive text on my phone will change 'Scots' to 'Pants'. I assume I use the word 'pants' more often. Which surprises me, to be honest but never mind. At least I'm expecting it now

David Cameron thought LOL meant lots of love when he was texting his friend that edited the Mirror or whatever it was during the phone hacking scandals.

For some reason, the French do have le texte prédictif but also seem to think it can be intuitive in some cases - saisie intuitive - which may be why all the ones I know socially prefer to speak on their mobiles rather than text..........

Nasturtium used to be obscene but now it's just inappropriate. How boring!

  • May have to explain that one, B3.....

But real Scotsmen don't wear pants, r'girl, so perhaps that's why the mix up arises. Maybe predictive text simply can't cope with the vagaries of the Scots in general  ;)

It's a play on the word 'lark' as in 'sod that for a lark' Obs.    :)
Nothing worse than an inappropriate nasturtium, B3.
