Halloween dressing up stems for Celtic and Roman traditions which the Church "adopted" or overrode in 800 by introducing All Souls Day. Door knocking for treats was a medieval introduction in which poor people sang a psalm or prayer in return for favours. All very European and good fun with good intentions.
Trick or Treating is a tacky USA invention and not an improvement tho I do like the way it is now becoming a UK family event to go to a farm and pick a pumpkin and carve it. I just hope more and more will use the seeds and flesh for soups and snacks rather than just binning it.

Your are probably right Obelix, I thought it WAS have a giggle, no, its have a nasty pop at people who dont share the same views as others.Calling people who read the Sun, as having the iq of a 7 year old.
Whilst not wanting to start an argument, that was not quite the point made. It was not about IQ, but reading level (though that's not quite right either - it should be vocabulary). I thought it was quite well known that the vocabulary use in The Sun is deliberately quite limited, and at the expected level for a (can't remember how old) child. That doesn't mean all Sun readers have that vocabulary level but that it is all that is needed in order to read it. Not IQ related.

My students who are often Sun 'readers', but when I talk about puns, they haven't got a clue. Yet the majority of Sun headlines are excruciating puns. It's not necessarily lack of intelligence, but lack of education.

I agree Nanny Beach. 7 year olds should not be insulted on a public forum.
