An addiction like gardening you mean @Fire  ;)  I'm totally hooked!

It was for many many years, I was told moving to a bungalow would be much worse as all ground floor rooms would be in greater danger of invasion
My house is 3 stories and I've found spiders happily wandering around on the roof while I've been up there clearing gutters.

I always think of phobias as just a natural aversion to potentially harmful things, as much of a manefestation of our self-preservation instinct as anything. As we get older our fears usually become more rational or we learn when to fear and when not to. When I was a young kid I wouldn't touch any creepy crawlies but my mate Dave would pick anything up and I obviously couldn't show I was afraid of them if he was ok with them. After that I started learning about bugs and nature and the more I knew the less I was afraid of the things that couldn't hurt me. Now I regularly horrify people by allowing things like wasps or hornets to crawl over my hands. I still won't touch anything that I don't know about in case it bites or stings but that's generally a wise move for anyone I think.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

I wasn't being unsympathetic.  Just pointing out that it needs sorting to help you enjoy to the full the many years you have ahead of you.

Yes actually - those really big running spiders that come in the house in the autumn. They often run across the floor towards a chair where I'm sitting and disappear under it. They've caused problems now and then when a dog on one side of the room has seen a spider diving under the sofa another dog is sleeping on. First dog runs after the spider, sleeping dog wakes up thinking the other one is attacking him and reacts before he's properly awake. We end up with a dog scuffle and the spider long gone.

Oh yes many spiders with a whole room to use end up coming after me! Also had spiders sit there with legs and fangs raised at me. Thanks Fire, as if I would be stupid enough to get that close. Your picture has given me handshake!
