Tried to watch the programe about that on tv. Didnt make it past the first movement, which is something as I dont even like pictures they send a cold shiver down my spine.
Josusa - we bought our house in Belgium with a paddock so we could have horses but I developed 3 slipped lumbar discs, not good for riding. This house also has a paddock but we'll be letting our neighbour put his horses there.

Agree purplerallium my sentiments exactly, watering garden last evening saw tight web 🕸encasing Geum leaves 🌸and lurking close a strange 8 legged whiteish spider 🕷with long front legs like pincers, was going to take photo but didn’t want to get up close and personal, the OH (who used to be brave about such things until I made him a jibbering wreck by screaming 🧟♀️and making him prove he had despatched said spider without actually wanting to see it) suggested I hose the web and spider, I did but where is it now?
I wonder where the widespread phobia in the UK comes from. It must be a learnt response. They are not going to hurt you.
Don't know. You may be right - certainly you can learn to be afraid of something (especially if one or both of your parents are scared of it). But it may be a hind brain thing - ancient response to something 'other' which in some places could hurt you - even kill you. Like snakes - it's an instinct. If that instinct is met when you're very young with 'don't be silly, it's just a spider' then you learn not to react. If it's ignored then maybe you keep it. Surely if your parent starts screaming then you will always have the phobia. But it may not start there.

When we moved to this house, there were conkers on every window sill, and in some floor corners,I promptly chucked them out, only to discover now why they were there! Yes we are inundated with spiders! I don't like to kill them, because they catch flies. But I was bitten once by a spider hiding in a log pile, and boy,was that painful,I had to get help from the doctor, who confirmed that it was a spider bite.
The whole truth is an instrument that can only be played by an expert.
You think? I suspect it's pretty cultural. We're not scared of butterflies, because we are told they are pretty and fairy-like, even though some are red and could fly in our face. Bats are apparently scary but not badgers - old Brock.
I get a new lot of conkers every year. It is only now I tend to throw them away. The rooms with them do tend to have less visits, and where this year's are turning up there are no conkers.
