Thank you @fidgetbones and @BobTheGardener for your advice, information and encouragement which gave me the push I needed to get the right tool and tackle my snowberries! I had a brilliant day yesterday with my new mattock and am looking forward to more hacking and whacking today - just great.

Today I tasted my first ever home grown greengage, bliss! There are two more on the tree. I hope in a couple more weeks to be eating my first ever home grown apple, also one of three. I planted the trees four years ago.
One of the three apples fell off today, so we ate it and despite being the size of a golf ball, it was surprisingly sweet and flavoursome. I polished off the other two greengages.
