  • Considering giving dahlias the boot next year.  Every single one has been totally and utterly demolished by the molluscs this year.  All were started in pots and planted out when good and strong.  Didn't seem to matter.  Normally they left Red Fox alone for some reason but it's torn to shreds this year.  Very demoralising.

Dahlias are wonderful plants if given the chance to flourish. I have filled many a honey pot this year by using a few slug pellets early on in the season.

My dahlias have been good this year, despite the weather and I've not had any slug/snail damage that I've noticed.

I thought given the weather the slugs would not be that active but for me it seems to have drawn them to the dahlias.  Weirdly they also ate astrantia this year which I never known them to touch.

Anyway, try and end on a positive.  I really enjoyed Bowman's Root this year and will consider adding a few more next year.

I've had the usual damage to Hostas, but by this time of year, I'm not bothered.

I’m not growing any other veg than runner beans and tomatoes, and then only half the usual amount.  Will always grow Firestorm, don’t know about moonlight,  marvellous crop but white runner flowers just doesn’t  look the same.
Can’t  be bothered with other veg, so cheap in the shops and not worth the expense of home grown.

Don't  think I’ll grow Begonias again, had them for about 25 years, they take a lot of looking after, daily picking of females, haven’t got the time.

I will be growing more perennials from seed so as to cut the workload next year.

There's some veg that won't be cheap this winter ... onions for example ... brother says UK yield is down by at least 50% and kleipieper says it's the same in Holland ... if I can find room in the freezer I'm going to buy some now and chop and sweat them and freeze in portions.  We use a lot of onions in the winter.

I remember one year when we were in India, the national shame of them having to buy onions from Pakistan.
