    Why does anyone start a thread about spitting on the first day of our lads playing?

    Personally I can barely follow the rules of football (mostly watching tennis from Queen's and Aus cricket - we are fountained with sport at the moment :)), but I will watch nonetheless...because it is our lads.

    Seriously, who cares about spitting? The temp was around 28 degs apparently...quite hot, people spit, the other guys don't complain, why should you?

    Oh, and they won. :):D:):D:):D:):DB) Yeeeeaaaaahhhh!

    @Daisy33 :)
    I believe that most TVs have an off switch and that watching soccer is not mandatory, especially for Gardeners. Problem solved  B)

  • Well said @Daisy33. Firstly, it's not mutually exclusive to like gardening and football, and secondly if you saw the match last night there was a midge infestation, and if you've ever run hard through a cloud of midges I bet you'd end up spluttering and spitting them out.

    Don't get me wrong ... I come from a long line of season ticket holding football and gardening fans. But if you don't like what you see on TV ... you have the choice ... you can turn it off if you want to ... you have the power!  ;)

    i hate boxing ... I don't watch it.

    I really dislike the hype around "world class" sport these days and expect much better behaviour and performances from people being paid a fortune whether on or off the  pitch.    As for midgies, there are repellents and people can and should breathe thru their noses rather than run around open mouthed and looking gormless.  They're supposed to be fit after all and not gasping for air after a wee canter of 30 or so yards.

    If you do like football or think it's patriotic to support no matter whom is playing anything with a sponsored national t-shirt, fine.  Just don't expect me to join in.

    As for Freddie's Dad - yes, offensive.  Bad behaviour is classless and depends on upbringing rather than origins.

    If you are not a sport fan and would generally rather eat your own leg than watch a game of football, now, when the coverage has hit total saturation, is when you notice these things.

    I agree Dove, I hate horse racing, I don't watch it. The trouble with the football just now is you can't really avoid it unless you shut yourself off completely from all news and current affairs media for a whole month. And there are other things still happening in the world that one might like to know about, hard though it is to find them out

    Love football, hate spitting?  Watch women's football.

    Gulp, Raisingirl... you honestly couldn't find a bigger sports fan than me. Football happens not to be my fave and we have Queens and cricket also on. Nonetheless I watched the first match, duty to do so...
    ....I just don't think spitting is relevent.

    I won't eat my own leg...I'm vegetarian. :s

    Daisy - spitting is offensive wherever it occurs and "heros" should set better examples as should the managers and other people around them.  I don't think the ability to kick, hit or catch a ball gives you the right to behave badly in any way.

     :) I meant B3 - who is 'not into sport'. It's not the relevance (or otherwise) of the spitting, so much as the fact a person 'not into sport' may not notice it until it's all over all of the news all of the time, as it is just now
