Firstly, let me say I am absolutely astonished at the response. I think on the whole most people like MDs garden and that's, more or less, what I expected. But, I would also suspect that some people, probably females, like the presenter more than the garden. While others like the scruffy look because it justifies their own lack of effort?
Just to clear up a few points; If someone earns a living through his work then in my eyes he's a professional. MD doesn't have to have worked his way through horticultural college to be called an expert. He'd lose me anyway. I made a 'tongue in cheek' comment about knowing every Latin name. If Latin names are your thing, then that's fine with me. But, the question I was asking was about MDs garden, not Latin names or the other garden paths some people seemed to have wandered down.
It would be a sad world if every garden was the same. Gardens are as individual as the people who create them. And a never ending chore to people who have no interest.
For my own part, there is nothing better on a summers day, beer in hand, than looking out at my, dare I say it, manicured lawns and neat rows of supermarket bought flowers (with no Latin names). I can honestly say that I'm not a gardener but I do put in a lot of effort. And, most of the time anyway, it works. And I still think MDs garden is very, scruffy. Forgive me.
Thank you all for your replies. Happy gardening! Whatever your garden looks like.
I am not if what some seem to think a gardener but I spend an awful lot of my time and spare gardening. I know very few Latin names and know most things by their common name but on the off chance I need to know a Latin name well that is what google can provide. Do I want a bit more than “.a bit of colour in the garden” ? well yes but I also what it to be a place of relaxation and peace. Gardening is not a one size fits all. It should reflex the person maKing the garden, how it is to be used and the environment around it.

Billy - I think it's insulting that you think females think of MD more as eye candy than a gardener. You also, for those reading your post in their own tone of voice rather than yours, made no emphasis when mentioning either MD, scruffiness or Latin so should not be surprised by the responses from gardeners more knowledgeable than you.
I'd rather see a scruffy garden waiting for a spring tidy and trim and for hidden perennials to burst forth than a bare soil garden waiting to be filled with SM bedding in regimented rows or blocks.

Totally agree with you Obelixx ... I'm hugely insulted by the thought that as a 'female' I watch GW because I like MD rather than his garden ... how disparaging of the work of generations of female gardeners who have been so influential on British gardens ... from Gertrude Jekyll and Vita Sackville-West to Carol Klein and Christine Walkden and of course, many many others ... I'm infuriated and incensed!
Go and buy your bedding plants that you don't know the name of which have been raised by other people and enjoy your own garden. It certainly wouldn't make me happy.

What makes me laugh is that older men seem to think that older women must by default find older men attractive on the t.v., whilst for themselves of course, they prefer to see younger women, which is why there is a plethora of women under 40 on t.v. with scant regard for women above that age, except in quaint programmes like this one, antique shows, art or somesuch...
How often do we see a septuagenarian male cosying up to a young female on a couch, presenting some show or other.. quite often... how about the other way around? it doesn't exist does it?.. we're not supposed to express those kind of feelings..
I think, nay hope, the original poster is being deliberately provocative to wind us all up and it’s working! If he genuinely believes women watch MD because of the ‘eye candy’ factor then he’s a dinosaur that deserves to be ignored. If he genuinely believes his garden is better than Montys, well there’s no accounting for taste. Monty is certainly a hero and an inspiration to many, including me, but the only folks I know who have have a HUGE crush on him are male. And heterosexual.
