Yes Dove - Why?   Loads of superficially unattractive presenters and reporters all over the TV but there for their expertise and knowledge and, sometimes, personality.

Have to agree about AT - used to love him and still enjoy his How to Be a Gardener but not the syrupy path he's gone down lately.

Billy C - if you don't want fall out, think a bit more before you hit the keyboard.

Your comment about some viewers mostly female prefering Monty to his garden was a touch controversial Billy, as I am sure you know.

I freely admit that I find Monty attractive, but I do enjoy watching GW and always have done with or without him. I also like his garden and Nigel and Nelly. You certainly managed to stir the pot, but never mind, it turned into an interesting thread.

Some of the great presenters/frontmen ... Robin Day, Cliff Michelmore, the Dimbleby family, David Attenborough, Frank Bough, Michael Buerk, Desmond Lynam ... I could go on and on and on ............ I'll wager as much as you like that not one of them got his job because of his good looks ...

I wonder how BillyC would feel/have felt if his employment prospects depended on his continuing good looks .......

Only watched the year opener, but TV's GW has recently gotten into a good stride.  Monty wasn't he self taught?  That's part of his attraction.

I went to one of his talks, and you know what, I've never felt so youthful.  Yes, lots of grey old ladies sitting alongside me swooning at his soiled hands.  He was, and is, quite marvelous.

He did show a few behind the scenes photos of his plot.  Apparently Meadowview gets flooded often.  Which looked like a nightmare.  To me it seems to be a difficult flat and boring plot, but you don't really get a feel for a place until you stand in it.  Some gardens borrow so much from the surroundings, and that's also hard to guage.  I think MD said it was once just a field and he initially seeded it with many trees.  There's certainly enough there of interest.

It's funny what grabs our attention and moves us.  And how this changes.  Currently I'm blown away by some wild primulas that have blown in and bloomed after the thaw.  I was spellbound by a completely neglected nearby garden.  Whereas I'm pretty annoyed with my own hand in our borrowed garden.   Lawns fall in and out of favour with me.  But I'd likely be very happy with a flat manicured lawn nestled in a wooded valley or with a gorgeous backdrop.

Monty obviously enjoys his garden and that certainly translates well to screen.

I believe that Sophie Raworth was initially told she wasn't attractive enough to present the early evening news.

She had a make over! Susie and Trinny sorted her out. And just to get back on track with the original post, no I don’t like MDs garden.

Nor mine but I'm not keen on her presenting " Chelsea" simply because, by her own admission, she knows nothing about gardening.
If only presenters WERE chosen on "attractiveness" , we'd never see the loathsome Piers Morgan ever again.

Can we include "attractiveness from within", please?  I don't know how to say this without appearing rude, which is the last thing I intend - but I doubt Carol Klein enthusiasts (of whom I am one) watch her on TV because of her looks.  Presenters who seem to spend all their time thinking about their appearance, "dolled up to the nines" as my mum would have said, detract from what they are talking about.

I fear this is particularly a female problem.  If you're a man you're allowed to be "craggy" or "interesting" in appearance, to give gravitas to the news, or to give information on a subject about which you are an expert.  But if you're a woman who's not classically beautiful (but definitely not ugly) like Sophie Raworth, you're only acceptable once you've had a makeover and been "sorted out".  (Sorry, Bright star!)
