I can't imagine the amount payable to an assistant gardener chez Monty would break the programme's overall budget.  I do think they should be acknowledged.

They might not want to be on TV. My partner has been asked in his line of work a couple of times and he always refuses!

They did it on Beechgrove and it's been done, I believe at RHS Harlow Carr witha  whole area of the garden being dug out, cleared and replacement soil brought in for re-planting.  Not the sort of thing your average gardener can or would do.

Whether or not Monty's garden help wants to appear on TV is irrelevant.  I don't see why he can't just admit he has help and explain what they do.  Anyone can see he can't be there all the time as he is away making other programmes, looking after his Welsh venture and maybe even socialising sometimes so why is he so shy of acknowledging help?

He's about 30 years my senior so he's certainly not my type - I watch it just because I like gardens and plants.

Some of the great presenters/frontmen ... Robin Day, Cliff Michelmore, the Dimbleby family, David Attenborough, Frank Bough, Michael Buerk, Desmond Lynam ... I could go on and on and on ............ I'll wager as much as you like that not one of them got his job because of his good looks ...

It is unfortunate that the same 'rules' don't apply to female presenters! I remember the fuss when Kate Adie came to our screens - not only was she a woman doing a 'man's job' but she was 'ordinary' looking. But she was and is, very much the exception.

Pathetic isn't it ... there's a quote from Kate Adie somewhere, saying that when she was reporting live from the height of the Iraq war, someone wrote to the BBC complaining about her appearance ........  :s
