Chocolate gingers - now there is a food that we can agree on Pdoc
The American Government's attitude to guns is completely unfathomable - even to most Americans I've ever spoken to about it. It's just unutterably sad. Why don't the population demand action? Why isn't it the biggest issue in American politics? Are they just completely numb? I really don't get it.

Obelixx: bet yours knees are rainbow colours today - ouch!
Chicky: I saw that book on WinterWatch - I might read that as my first "getting back in to reading" book. I am trying to wean-off TV watching at night and Podcasts have been great, but I haven't read a book for ages.
Hello all. Still at the inlaws so not getting much chance to look in. Cold but sunny here. Off to see Bow do her thing in Liverpool later. It'll be nice to have her back after 5 days in Berlin and 3 in Liverpool. She's having a whale of a time though.
LP sorry to hear about your friends' house. Awful. I'm glad they're safe, but what a horrible thing.
Chicky I read that book recently. I wasn't sure at first, but eventually I thought it was excellent (and I like Monty too ).
To those asking about the cloche - it's made from 1m long steel rods, bent carefully around a range of trees (starting big, ending small for fine tuning). They were quite tough to bend because of the type of steel, but they'll hold their shape because of it. And it's pinned into place with those big galvanised pegs. I am not home to see how it's lasting, but I used a lot of pegs so I think the foxes will give up on any idea of moving it, and the squirrels won't get in. Fingers crossed.
We postponed Valentine's Day. I'm rubbish at being romantic. OH much more so.
Obelixx I hope your knees are better soon. That sounds like quite an unpleasant accident.

'If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.'
Its a sunny day here at the moment after two days of continuous rain, got up this morning to find four builders on my balcony moving all my pots and troughs out on to the scaffolding quite a relief I thought I would have to move them all myself indoors they are now cleaning all the decking ready to put on three coats of a new non slip weather stain..........."Non slip" we will wait and see
I have new babies this morning, Helianthus annuus, Echinacea purpurea and Hollyhock Halo Red
With a bit of luck the balcony will be finished soon and I can get my little green house set up.

Anyone else listen to Melvyn Bragg this am on R4 in our time - fascinating about Fungii. Always knew they were important but now even more so worth a catch up listen if you missed it.
Spent 1/2 of yesterday at Royal Free eye clinic- routine visit. Clinic had all been redecorated and moved round, chap on the reception said it was paid for by a donation didn't make the clinic any faster of course. Even after all this time I can still never work out why it takes 4 hours for a vision & pressure check with all of 2min with consultant!
Totally agree with the incomprehension over America's gun laws. How can a country ban Kinder eggs (too dangerous for kids) yet permit wholesale gun ownership?
Hope you're feeling a bit better today, Obelixx. Your poor knees have been through a lot...
Those "finds" look really interesting, Wonky. I wonder who stashed them there? They must have a history. We've occasionally found interesting things in old houses we've lived in, including signatures and dates on walls under the wallpaper, and a spoon in the wall under a window seat, but nothing of value.
We saw Wellington in the market this morning and couldn't resist... he was only 50p so has become our late, joint Valentine's Day present.
Sunny here but very cold still, with a strong "blow-through" wind.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
Meant to say - heard some of that programme on fungi, and will catch up with the rest later. Fascinating stuff, especially the part about plants communicating information about aphid attack, via the micorrhizal fungi on their roots.
