Precious little out here yet other than dafs, but 3 of the crown imperials are way ahead of the rest for some reason looking forward to seeing what these monster Alliums turn out to be, a friend gave me 3 grapefruit sized bulbs from a Dutch market stall, the plants are pretty huge already The stinking hellebores are looking good. Nice native plant, the flowers hang around for months and they self seed easily. I find them very useful here for adding a bit of colour in deep dry shade
A nice show there, wish I had the patience to do lots of pots
With myself, it's not about patience but flowering bulbs have such a short season so I envisage lots of redundant pots for most of the year! What do members here do about that?
A 'weed' is just a plant in the wrong place - subjective!
I tend to put most of my bulbs in pots except Alliums. I only have a small garden now so I’d rather have the space for perennials. Also pots can be moved around to create interesting colour schemes. When the bulbs are over I just turf them out and replant pots with annuals.
Life's tragedy is that we get old too soon and wise too late.

Ah I see. I assumed bulbs last for more than a year but, having now done a quick google search, I see that this is generally not the case.

Depends what you go for, I never water pots enough so tend to go for bulbs that will come back. For tulips it’s mainly appledorn, ballerina and the like which seem to be pretty reliably perennial. If they are going to die I figure they may as well die in the garden as in a pot! I add a few newbies each year to make sure there is a decent showing. Main problem is remembering where the buggers are
Jelly, the Alliums look identical to my Globemasters that I purchased from Lidl a little way back. The first shoots emerge with a red tint then turn fully green.
Well then this goes back to my original query, i.e. you are left with redundant (non growing) pots for most of the year then? Maybe some short rooted plant can be added? If so, what would be suitable?
