I love a good gloaming.   Remember sitting on our back terrace in Belgium watching the sun slowly set one summer - 10:30 in late June but light lasted much longer - and our Oz friends both wondering at it.  Sunrise and sunset happen much faster nearer the equator and they weren't used to it.

    Good morning all.

Another slightly overcast day here, but lovely and warm. ( 33C forecast for later)

Hotel occupancy seems to come in waves. Many people stay for only one night as tours are assembled from many flights to set off the following day.

I'd love to see the Northern Lights, but the cold??? maybe not.

What a mess folk make of countries once they get into power ( add religious fanaticism into the mix and it's even more tragic )

The new President here in The Gambia seems to be proving popular with talk of foreign investment and improvements in infrastructure. I did shudder to hear that " The Chinese" wanted to set up " fishing " here. ( hoovering every living thing from the ocean springs to mind ) but , mercifully, that seems to have been rejected.

A couple of the hotels are going " all inclusive" next year which will hit the local shops / restaurants badly as guests will stay inside and not venture out to spend money locally. It's  a balance between control and a free for all I'm sure. Free Market Economy has winners and losers too.

    Morning all.

We are going to see "The Darkest Hour" at the cinema this afternoon, then eat out.

    Morning all.

NannyB,  the dumpling recipe referred to was for a Clootie Dumpling but instead of being steamed in a "cloot"....a cloth... was being done in a microwave.

Hosta - "gated" holiday communities are safer for tourists who no longer have any interaction with dodgy locals - see Jamaica news - and also make more income and profits for the resort owners.

Joyce - I've often wondered what the clootie was.  Obvious really.

    Nanny Beach says:

I dont know where you live hogweed, but here in the SE UK dumplings are made of suet, flour, water, (pinch of herbs) and accompay casseroles, what you describe sounds like "spotted Dick", (but wheres the suet!)  Mine usually go on top of the stew, (which has been par boiled) for the last 20 minutes, but last year, been late home, desided to give them a go in the microwave, not cripsy but perfectly edible.

    See original post
NB I live in Scotland. I should have said a fruit dumpling - steamed usually and eaten as a pudding. You can get a clootie dumpling which is steamed in a cloth which makes a 'skin' round it, or a bowlie dumpling which is steamed in a bowl. Both take a couple of hours to steam.
I may try my normal recipe in the microwave and see how it goes........

Busy's in Norfolk at the mo GW.  It appears that it' son in English in La Roche-sur-Yon this week so OH and I may go and see it.  Or maybe we'll wait for the DVD........ or do both.

Love dumplings but rarely make them.   Try to keep carbs down.

Still windy here but dry now.  We've had almost 62mm of rain now since mid December.  Excellent.

It was such a lovely sunny morning that we decided to go to the 5pm cinema instead of the 2pm. I've spent nearly 2 hours weeding the rockery bank, bit fiddly and steep, and planting some more violas.

I like dumplings too. That dumpling sounds a bit like spotted Dick, like that too. My quote replies put my bit in quotes too, so I rarely use them.
