Golly how "deep" is the frost, can you get out the door!!!

I turn my thermostat down when I go out, with the dogs or shopping, its detatched but we have cavity wall insulation, it doesnt loose much heat when I am out cannot see the point of heating an empty place, think the winter bills are scary enough, incidentally, folks on here of an ahem "certain age", I have normally by now received letter to say winter fuel allownace is in bank, no letter so far this year, anyone else received or not theirs?

  • Well, the engineer has come and gone ... nice young man and proud father ... apparently he lives just along the road here and his little boy goes to the school at the top of the rise so after coming here and diagnosing the problem and ordering the part Daddy went up the hill to join in Wednesday Breakfast Club at which parents are welcome ... he said his son will be so surprised as he's never been able to go along there before image

The boiler needs a new heat exchange module which has been ordered and will be fitted tomorrow afternoon.  Apparently the part is so expensive that British Gas would offer us a good deal on a new boiler instead ... we've said no thanks to that unless fitting the module uncovers more problems ... apparently the 'something or other flue' isn't made like that any more so if fitting the new module causes a problem with the flue (which he said was a slight possibility) then a new boiler it will have to be .................

Nanny Beach ... I had my Winter Fuel Allowance letter at the end of last week, so they're on their way ...

We had a heavy burst of hail while the engineer was here, but now we have bits of blue sky appearing and the sun's trying its hardest to shine ... OH has just set off on my bike to go to the dentist ... expect a downpour any minute image

    Morning all.

Thick frost, blue sky and the promise of sun.

Had a new boiler three years ago.....result was a drop in cost of heating so maybe worth considering Dove if your boiler is fairly old.

  • Our boiler was new just before we bought the house in 2011 ... that's not considered old is it?  image

Dove, it could be in terms of efficiency. You would need to check it out.

    Hi all.

    Sunny, but bitterly cold here.

That is not an old boiler Dove

P####d off this morning, insurance company have decided not to pay our travel claim. Why do we even bother with travel insurance?

Today will be spent making angry phone calls and sending e-mails.

punk - I'm increasingly convinced that insurance is just an officially sanctioned scam. There's always some reason why they won't pay. The AA is one of the worst, IME. They always find some fine print which means they have to charge for the call out.

15 years is the normal life span for a modern combination boiler, Dove. 25 if it's not a combi. 40 is not unheard of but 40 years ago they were made of thicker metal than they are now.

  • Apparently our boiler has good efficiency ratings - or did when checked at the last service ... the chap we bought the house from was a heating engineer and did the house up to be his family home .. , but then his fiancée decided that she didn't want to take her son out of his present school and move across Norfolk to here, so he sold the house and moved to join her.  We got a pretty good deal.

As for the AA, it's amazing how they can reduce the annual fee if you tell them you can get a similar service elsewhere ... last time I told them that and they halved the fee to match it I told them they could 'go whistle'  ... if they couldn't give me their best deal as a longstanding member then I wasn't interested and I went with Green Flag who have been very good.  AA keep begging me to go back ... I'll let them beg a bit longer and see what they can come up with ....... image

OH is convinced that insurance is licensed extortion ....... what about that awful tv advert which plays on people's 'Nagging Doubt' ........ no wonder half the country's adults suffer from anxiety image
