  • LG , your daughter has great taste image , I was a trustee of the  Chamber Orchestra Kremlin back in the 90s and I got to meet some incredible people  including Slava and his brilliant soprano wife Galina . Their's is a truly remarkable love story .  He was so so funny he could have been a comedian......I had some great toasts with him...image

This is typical of the great man.......

“[Shostakovich] gave me the score of his first Cello Concerto, and in four days I memorized it and played it for him while he accompanied me on piano. We were so happy, we drank a little vodka together. We then played it again, not so perfectly, and drank more vodka. The third time I think I played the Saint-Saens Concerto while he accompanied his own concerto. We were very happy.”

Ob......you can download the podcasts to your iPad or to your PC http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006qnmr/episodes/downloads

Long phone call from the Physio (VIP Physio apparently) I saw the other week about my knee ... the results of my MRI scan confirms what I have been saying for 23 years since my first injury ... alongside the normal wear & tear/arthritis for a person of 27 who has been very physically active in her past, my Anterior Cruciate Ligament is virtually destroyed and incapable of functioning. image

The long and short of it is that, at the age of 27, the likely outcome of a surgical graft  and reconstruction  isn't positive. image  Not only is recovery time likely to be much longer, but due to consequent inactivity other health problems may arise.   image

Of course, had I been taken seriously 23 years ago ................................ image

VIP Physio feels that the best course of action is to strengthen my knee with exercise.  He knows that I've attended the Knee Group at the Community Hospital for a series of regular sessions in the past, but feels that it's likely that the exercises I was given were not specific to my problem.

He will see me on Friday morning and give me some specialised exercises which I must do at least a couple of times a day every day 24/7 for ever and ever and ever .    OH says he'll do them with me to make sure that I don't forget ((hug))

    See original post

I may not be blessed with great knees image  (the Physio says they look sturdy but that's deceiving) , but my OH is certainly the best there is image

Aren't physios wonderful Dove.  I cracked my knee cap years ago, aged 32, in my first show jumping competition in the club - beginners so nothing high but my horse hated jumping and did it all as fast as possible with the result that I went straight on after the last jump while she swerved right.  I landed knee cap first on the kicking boards.  Ouch.  After the finish line so not a fault. Was helped up and back on for the speed round to decide the winner.  First place for me.

Next day, couldn't walk.  Went to A&E with melon sized knee where a junior doctor, clutching manual said "According to this, this doesn't hurt" - Wrong, as she aspirated the knee before the whole thing was put in an ankle to hip cast which dried loose.....   Eventually this came off and I was sent to physio for the torn ligaments.

"Oooooh, you've got a rotated tibia!  Only seen those in books!"   My knees have been multi directional ever since as the lift knee ligaments came out in sympathy under the strain of supporting the rest of me with that mega cast.

I know I can download to the PC as I've done it but I was more interested in maybe having something to listen to outside when I'm doing a boring job.   I suspect my very basic emergencies only mobile phone won't answer.

That is hilarious,  Dacha, love it.

Daughter has had a more successful practice now so I'm keeping schtum so as not to jinx the positive vibe. Hope Possum's issue, whatever it may be, gets resolved before Bilbao, Obxx.

Sorry to hear about your knee, Dove, but also glad you've got a plan and a decent physio - and of course a decent OH!

Re: podcasts. Yes, that's really what they're intended for. You just need an mp3 player, which you can pick up fairly cheaply if you don't want to get a smartphone for the purpose. It may even be the case that your phone will play mp3s, in which case you just need to download the podcasts to it. It'll probably be a bit more fiddly than just using an app,  but don't forget that podcasts are fairly early technology really - pretty sure they predate smartphones anyway - so if you can play music on your phone you can probably listen to podcasts too.

Just watched the recent Chris Packham documentary about Aspergers. Really really good, and helpful too as one of my daughter's best friends has Aspergers and although she already understood quite a lot about it, it gives her a little more insight. Jacqueline du Pré doc recorded and saved for later.

Sorry to here about your knee verdict Dove.  Hope you can build the exercises into your daily routine somehow, its always easier when you can do something out of habit.

Fingers crossed for LG’s daughters audition ? (i know, i know, thats not a cello, but its the best I can muster at this stage of the day?).....and hope Possum snaps out of it before your trip Obxx.

Had a great day at Stourhead yesterday ...will put some pics on the garden visits thread tomorrow, but here’s a taster
