I'm trying to root Madagascar Periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus) in water today.  I have had good luck with them reseeding themselves season to season off dropped blossoms, but wanted to try to root it in water just to see if it would work.

    Well done Lulu
What I like about rooting in water is, you can see what's going on.  Soil cuttings are a bit secretive

Potted up the sedum cuttings as they had they had plenty of roots on. New growth on them all and flowers!

Salvia and Penstemon, still alive and growing but no roots.

Ive now got a couple of clematis cuttings and hebe that came off by accident so rather than just chucking them I’ve popped them in a jar. Some Hardy Geraniums too that came off while dividing - only had little bits of root on so I’m hoping they’ll grow a bit more in water before I pot them up.

Always worth a try. I compost mine if the water gets murky and nothing's happened. Maybe right. Maybe wrong😐

  • Where do you put your jar of cuttings @Mr. Vine Eye ?  Are they in a heated area greenhouse/house window or outside? I would like to try taking more cuttings but am never sure where to place the jars.

I just leave mine on the worktop, not in the window as they can get to hot. I only do fuchsias really though and they don’t like sun.  I have done penstemon but got more than enough now, didn’t plant them all out this year.
everything else roots easily in pots in the GH. Or plants like geraniums,   heuchera  achillea just poke back in the ground, no need to root first.
    Lavender germinates easy from seeds.

I have a packet of lavender seeds that q never got round to planting as I thought they'd be a bit particular. I'll give them a go in the spring. @Lyn

  • Of the hundreds of cuttings I have taken, I put them in compost and rarely am successful.  I bought perlite recently for planting bulbs in my heavy clay soil and put some rose cuttings, garlic and a few random others in a jar of perlite and water.  The garlic took off after about a week and I planted out three rose cuttings today.  They were in for at least a month.  Def going to try water rooting though.  The perlite is good for stability, but you can't see the roots!
  • Oh, and I read somewhere not to use filtered water, just ordinary tap water.  We have two rain barrels, and an abundance of rain, so I use that.

Mine took an age to germinate - I was just about to give up and chuck them when I spotted a little shoot.

I only got the one though - but it’s growing strongly.

@Guernsey Donkey2 - mine are on the kitchen windowsill
