I must say that the 'trouble' in Cromer seems to have galvanised the media ... one would think there was no real trouble in the world to report. I mean, it's Carnival week .... not a village fete .... what do people expect? They have had family days during the week ... things always get a bit more raucous at the weekend and the police usually keep things pretty much under control ... sadly someone has reported being raped and that's awful ... but it's hardly a reason for all the pubs and shops shutting.
Carnivals in the past have always had groups of young men wandering around looking intimidating, getting a bit drunk and misbehaving. There's been something stolen from a shop ... if you read local press that sort of thing is reported pretty regularly. I'm not minimising the reported rape but if you read the local press over the years sadly it's not the most unusual thing to happen ... awful tho it is ... The police have always had an increased presence at carnival and it's not unusual for pubs to shut early to prevent trouble escalating. (The locals usually know which pubs have their back doors open)
Next year, when Cromer shopkeepers are experiencing a drop in profits they'll be wondering why holidaymakers are going somewhere else.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Lyn , a friend who lives right on the edge of Cromer said just now, "Not a sign of it here .... no more police cars than usual along the main road last night and our neighbours who have a kiosk on the front didn't say anything this morning."
But Radio 4 have been talking this morning as if WW3 had broken out on the North Norfolk coast
