That’s great. Iwas told that I wouldn’t get any wildlife in the pond for the first year. Just shows you doesn’t it …….build it and they will come !
So true! At the moment mine are just invertebrates (mosquito larvae, mayfly larvae, worms, water beetles, water lice, snails and some other things to small to photograph to ID) but I think I may set up the wildlife camera by the pond to see if the frog/toad is using it.
I do love it when I find something that's totally new to me. This brightly coloured fly was perched outside my back door and I couldn't work out what it could be. Apparently they are fairly common but I've never seen anything like it before. This is a Four-barred Major soldier fly, Oxycera rara. Pretty eyes and fierce looking spines in its back too.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
I also tried moth trapping last night but the weather was cold and gusty so I didn't have much success. I'll keep praying for a warm calm night but it seems that is too much to ask for August this year Three new species last night though it was worth a go. My garden moth total is now up to 126 confirmed species.
This is the Pale Straw Pearl Udea lutealis
and this one has the working title 'Moth unknown 17'
This Iron Prominent has to be the hairiest moth I've ever seen.

I was in a local park today. They have a large areas of insect friendly planting ( mostly coreopsis, sunflowers and cornflowers plus the usual other wildflower suspects) Maybe it was the cool weather, but I have more bees and butterflies in my garden than I saw there. I saw one bee.
