Insects of the day

  • @BobTheGardener that's pretty impressive for a phone, especially blurring the background like that! I took the pic of the dragonfly with my Sammy A5 but focus is pretty hit and miss. The obvious advantage to a phone camera is you always have it with you
  • A few of the lovely moths we have trapped in the moth box - a few nights ago before the unsettled wet weather came along.  A few of the many Jersey Tiger Moths - we have had up to 15 at one time and the second picture is the lovely Least Carpet moth.
  • The Green Shieldbugs have now become adults. Here is one of them.

  • That's a fine slug Hexagon🙂 I also love that mix of colours with the shield bug above.

This isn't an amazing photo like everyone else's but yesterday's Insect of the Day for me was the blue butterfly, I've never seen them in my garden before:

I think they were the holly blue, there were 3 of them flitting around. A little too quick for me to see the 'inside' but I got an impression of darker blue and black.

Lovely pic @Victoria Sponge. I dont think we get those here, but maybe I just haven't seen them.
I did see this one though, three years ago on the lower slopes of The Easains, east of Fort William. Don't know if it's a holly though - maybe @Alan Clark2 in Liverpool could confirm, or otherwise, if he's around  :)

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • It is a Holly Blue. The only other common blue species is the Common Blue, but that has conspicuous spots on the underside of the wings. There are other blue species, but they are rare and only found in the South.
  • I think I'm on the edge of the northern range here @Fairygirl (if it is a holly blue) according to my insect book anyway.

There are more blue butterflies than I realised when I looked it up. It has been an unusual year for butterflies though, I've never seen so many, but of the more glamorous common types like Peacock, Red Admiral and Painted Lady. I suspect they may have migrated. Haven't seen any Commas or Small Tort though this year which is unusual.

Cheers Alan. I thought it was, but had never got anyone to confirm. I expect we have little pockets of them around the country.  :)

A Painted Lady visiting the agastache rugosa.  I'll definitely be growing these every year now - just covered with insects of all types. :)
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Just found this dude creeping around underneath my Buddleia's. No idea what it is!
