Had to rescue this handsome feller out of our lantern yesterday afto. It took two of us and a step ladder! Its a shame about the busy-patterned cloth but we were more concerned about catching him safely than photographing him
Lovley pic @mikeymustard. Well done on the rescue too I rescued a hoverfly form the spider web on the kitchen window yesterday. I felt slightly responsible for him getting stuck as he'd been sitting on the outside of the window, and when I went to look at him more closely, he flew up and straight into it.
It was quite tricky getting the sticky web off him, but he flew off, hopefully none the worse for his little adventure. Hoverfly 1, Spider 0
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
What a fantastic selection of insects we have seen recently - loving all the pictures - brilliant. We have been using a moth box recently and can't recommend one highly enough - we will have to return it to the owner soon, but making the most of it whilst we can.Swallow TailBuff TipSwallow Prominent
Thanks Nollie, yes he (it) certainly doesn't look very friendly - they are so beautiful up close, some have soft downy heads too - we find it quite exciting to discover such a large variety in the box each morning.
@Fire I don't have a link. A Moth box is a wooden three sided box with a strong fluorescent type light set up across the top of an open box. Set up outside and when plugged into the mains i.e. light on, the moths are attracted to the light, fly into the box (no harm done to moths) where they settle until we release them at dawn. Before releasing the moths are photographed, recorded and released into a nice thick bush or tree where they can sleep for the rest of the day or fly off at their convenience. We have caught over 100 so far in the past 3 weeks and all have flown off during the day and perhaps some fly out of the trap during the night. This is a recognized procedure for recording moths - just as a butterfly net is used during the day to record species.

Plenty of wasp spiders in my garden this year.
