This hairy ginger came scurrying over to me while planting some borage and calendula seedlings out into the garden today. She/he was so frantic! Wouldn’t sit still for even a moment and sped off, but not before I could get a few snaps.

Just hope it’s not somebody who will eat up my garden

Looks like a mid-instar form of one of the squash bugs.

So does one squash them or not?

Our balcony planters (containing Centaurea cyanus) are full of ladybird babies.
One kept doing laps along the outside, presumably looking for a way off. I gave him a hand. I keep tucking them into the grass by the Cat enclosure. It is growing long and undisturbed.

A female Common Blue which had just been feeding on the oregano flowers before briefly landing on a petunia:

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • One of four Jersey Tiger moths caught in our borrowed moth trap last night - I wonder what we will catch tonight. p.s. all safely released after photograph shoot this morning.

That is indeed a mouthful! Thanks @floralies, I use yahoo as a search engine and nothing came up.

    Gorgeous photos @matt_fender and @Guernsey Donkey2

Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.

Any idea what this is? About 3cm long, sitting on the patio.
Gardening. The cause of, and solution to, all of my problems.
  • It's a May Bug @stewyfizz - yes I know it isn't May anymore.  We have them still here, they like a lot of things are out of kilter with the seasons. These May bugs have a tendency to fly into lights erratically, making a loud buzzing sound.

It's a chafer but probably a summer chafer rather than a maybug. A maybug would have a darker head and would be a bit hairier.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
