I have no problem with dogs being allowed into gardens, but I think the idea of taking them to garden shows is utterly ridiculous.  It's bad enough constantly having to avoid the boxes on wheels which have become so popular lately.  The thought of falling over, or standing on, a dog is far worse.  The wheeled boxes can't bite back when you kick them out of the way. image

I fully agree with your points for the same reasons .  It is just the crowding that is the problem. Dogs and their leads, and trolleys, are a trip hazard in such crowded areas.

(Those  pull along supermarket baskets create  the same problem as they are out of your line of sight .)

  • With all due respect, the fact (and the point) is that dogs are allowed at the Chatsworth Show this weekend.

I spoke with people who had put their dogs in kennels for the day, because they didn't know.

I simply wanted to get that (and other messages) about the show out there and in the right place.

Surely it would be sensible to debate whether or not dogs should be allowed at Shows in other thread.

FYI - it's now sunny in Derbyshire but a bit windy again.  :-)

pansyface ,, that made me laugh out loud.

I have friends in Derbyshire who walk bearded dragons on leads. I wonder if they're allowed in too. AND IF NOT WHY NOT?

I'd love to be able to take my dogs to the big RHS gardens as we take them with us when we visit family in the UK and it means I can't go to Wisley on the way there or back.  Of course, they would need to add extra bins for poo bags strict rules about cleaning up after them.  I would n't dream of taking a dog to a crowded show.  Too uncomfortable for them.

Hosta - I think bearded dragons at a show would definitely stop the traffic!

I'v just got back from Chatsworth and daughter and I enjoyed our day. We set off early and took country lanes until close to the entrance  - no traffic queues coming from the west. Had a short wait in to get in, then straight to the floral marquees. Plenty of space so got round quite quickly, some beautiful and original displays, but nothing extraordinary on sale.

Loved the setting and the river and the way the site was spaced out so you could get away from people a bit. It was dampish this morning but the sun came out in after lunch, it would have had a more holiday atmosphere with better weather. Enjoyed the walk along to the gardens and even the weird ones give you something to think about. As for the rain, as daughter said, if a garden doesn't please you and make you want to smile when you see it in the rain, it's not much good in this country!

We checked our plan and decided we had seen all we wanted (missed some of the non garden-related trade stands) and went back to a couple of stands we had earmarked interesting to buy a plant or two.

We  walked over 4 miles but felt less tired than at Tatton, as we were able to walk at a more normal pace. Trainers and flat ankle boots were the chosen footwear,  feet stayed dry.

The ground was very wet in places, the wobbly bridge was fun but not very safe for some people, and a woman had fallen on the slope to the floral bridge, so there were still health and safety issues.

On the other hand, didn't once have to queue for the Ladies and as some others commented, that is an achievement!

Still some niggles - car park signage poor, relatively few plant stalls, outside the floral marquee, compared to Tatton, rather too many irrelevant trade stands for our taste. Why go to a flower show to buy coffee or kitchenware? Also some of the stalls were selling annual plants without making it clear this is what they were and charging perennial prices for them. We told one woman looking beside us that bunny tail grass was an annual and she and her friend decided not to buy it, but I later overheard a stall holder telling someone who had asked if it was perennial, that it was. Think RHS should maybe be stricter on things like this.

Sounds like parking and traffic has been a problem, maybe they should close the car parks for the event, or perhaps have a limited number of advance car park tickets available, and rely on the park and ride shuttle buses. Did they lay on shuttle buses from the nearest stations?
