My next door neighbour had her garden blitzed earlier this year by the council free of charge, because she couldn't be bothered doing anything with it. She is fit and able but just let it go wild . All her weeds etc came through to me as well as the rats that lived under the matresses she through outside. Today the council were back cutting down the huge Leylandi trees she let grow without every pruning and my heart was sad for the birds that sang it them every day...only hoping there were no nesting birds in them. I love the birds, we have feeders in our garden to encourage them to come in , I hope they find somewhere else to sing their songs but close enough so that I can hear them.
It's rather odd that the gardening firm that cleared this garden operate outside the law. It's difficult to believe that no consideration was given to nesting birds before it was hacked down.
If we can just get people to view weed killers in the same vein we'll be making progress.
I am sure this particular gardening firm isn't the only one Bob. If a gardening firm turns down a job because there are birds nesting in the garden at this time I am sure there will be other firms only too pleased to accept the work.
It's like dropping litter - the police will probably say they have more important offences to monitor. I am not going to drop this, I feel that the local gardening companies and the general public should be made aware or at least reminded of this law.

I'm feeling quite virtuous about the scruffy corners in my garden just now
