I'm at the grand old age of 30 too and i get the same looks from a lot of people. Especially at the Alpine Garden Society show at Chesterfield last weekend, but i don't mind, i'm doing what i enjoy luckily i have a few friends to talk gardening to (one is a gardener at Chatsworth House!).
And i think instagram is a great tool. I get tips and inspiration, seeing lots of new plants i've never heard of and plants that i already have are shown in a new light!
Autumnglory, Yes and I have done the same all my long life, I had a stack of yearly diaries all written up on the plants I grew and how they progressed or did not, whatever the case may be. Then I ended up in hospital, the family took the opportunity to put in a new bathroom for me and cleared the garage, all my Diaries went in the bin, years of history.
At my age able to manage my iPad Apple MacBook printer and phone is about it, face book Instagram and the other thing mentioned are beyond me, and of course I cannot understand why any one would put their lives on an electronic gadget with no control over views it will get, you read about it every day where thousands have been hacked, why would you put yourself in that position.
No insults were given or meant, I just do not know what those things are, my knowledge came from Dad, Books and experience as to what works in our area, things can be very different from you just ten miles away so it is important to know your own garden. What works for you will not always work for others.
I don't use it myself, although I might in the future ... certainly several people I know find it useful.
Wiki explains it thus
"... Instagram is a mobilephoto-sharing application and service that allows users to share pictures and videos either publicly or privately on the service, as well as through a variety of other social networking platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Flickr."
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
I must say I'm not very clued up myself. Facebook started when I was at university and since then i've not really kept up.
Tom, you have a friend who is a gardener at Chatworth house ! OH MY, I am jealous. I finally managed to visit there last year and it's such a dreamy place.
Pansyface, Instagram is a platform to upload all your pictures and then people can 'follow' each other which is like keeping track of their pictures. You choose to follow whatever interests you. Famous people are also on there so you can follow their pictures too. I'm following Adam Frost.
Anyway, I've seen the lovely pictures on instagram and they make my garden pictures look abysmal. Everytime i try to take a picture theres some horrible weed or mess in the background which wasn't noticeable in real life.
I'm not the gardener I thought I was! Time for improvement.
PERHAPS NOT FOR ME. I DON'T THINK ANYONE IN THEIR WILDEST DREAMS WOULD WANT TO LOOK AT ANY PICTURES THAT I MIGHT HAVE TAKEN - MOSTLY OUT OF FOCUS, SKEW-WIFF AND TOO FAR AWAY IMAGES OF FOOTPATHS LEADING TO NOWHERE IN PARTICULAR IN DERBYSHIRE.
ONE FAMILY MEMBER IS A KEEN PHOTOGRAPHER WHO ASSUMES THAT EVERYONE ELSE IN THE FAMILY IS A KEEN VIEWER AND LISTENER. MY FATHER, LORD BLESS HIM, ONCE ACTUALLY FELL ASLEEP HALF WAY THROUGH ONE OF THESE DISSERTATIONS AND BEGAN TO SNORE LOUDLY.
WE, WHO ARE LEFT BEHIND TO BEAR THE BURDEN OF YET MORE NEW PICTORIAL REVELATIONS, STILL REMEMBER THAT MOMENT OF HONESTY WITH GREAT FONDNESS.
CAN THERE, HONESTLY, BE ANYTHING MORE BORING THAN OTHER PEOPLE'S PHOTOS, GREAT PHOTOGRAPHERS AND THEIR FEROCIOUSLY EDITED OUTPUT EXCEPTED?
MAYBE OTHER PEOPLE'S FAMILY TREES MIGHT JUST PIP THEM TO THE POST.
I haven't got instagram............yet! Think I'll get OH to stick it on my phone as like the sound of it
I also love Pinterest but pretty addictive just looking at beautiful ideas for everything one maybe interested in which for me is interior design and gardening. Only trouble is too many ideas and OH goes nuts as I start projects off i.e. Digging new borders and he has to finish
"ah" Bakewell, the question is Pudding or Tart, I was pudding Joan was Tart when we were on one of our many visits to Chatsworth staying a few days each time. My wife loved the gardens often asking if we could use parts of the layout, I would ask which do you want the Lake or the Fountain, we would have needed half of Stockton. We had the pleasure of meeting Lady Devonshire a couple of times, a real down to earth Lady who made a real fuss of our Westie although he chased her hens. It was one of the last places we went to before my wife died, cherished memories.
Yup, i have a little house with my wife and dog in Darley Dale! And actually i prefer Bakewell! Much more beautiful than Matlock. I love Chatsworth too. My Uncle is Sean Doxey (who is quite high up i think) so i saw a lot of the place when i was younger, and with a good friend working in the gardens i get in free all the time too

Think the rude post has been removed.

TGG, THEY don't take photos of the bits of their gardens which " look abysmal".
It's your garden, you can do as you like.
As for " Time for improvement" :that applies to each and every one of us.

near Matlock (sorry to go off-thread)
