Never grown them from seed, I've just bought two more Royal Bumble which is red and a short grower and Amistad which is a wonderful purpely colour grows tall and quite rigid.
I love salvias (sorry hostafan). Went to the Chatsworth show and bought "Peter Vidgeon" (pink), and "Heatwave Blaze" (cherry red) amongst others.l took cuttings and they all rooted within a fortnight!
I keep them in a coldframe over winter with a bit of extra fleece protection if it gets really cold. The one l have managed to keep going the longest is a pale yellow one that was one of the ones introduced to commemorate the Cornish eclipse in 1999. That was only dug out this year, but it has produced many offspring !
Must admit,it is a bit of a "marmite" one. I don't like it but bought one for my mum & dad and they loved it. Still,it'd be a boring world if we all liked the same things
Mine is currently more white than red. Spotted an all red one at the golf course this morning and covered in bees, as is my Hot Lips, so I might liberate a cutting or three.
I also have a deep purple one which I like much more - a cutting grown gift and probably Amistad. I also have pineapple sage which is yet to flower but is always late and, of course, the culinary ones but the ordinary green one is positively limp in this drought.
Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.

I've just bought a salvia hotlips yesterday, and am wondering if it will be ok grown in a large container. If I put it in the ground is it likely to run rampant like ordinary sage? (My garden isn't very big). Some if you also say how easy it is to take cuttings. Is there a best time to do this, and do you put the cuttings straight into potting compost and with or without rooting hormone powder? Sorry, lots of questions, but this is a new plant for me to grow.
I know it doesn't go rampant, at least not in my garden. I rather wish it would as I love the smell. As to propagation I'll leave that to the experts to advise. I'm of the stick it in and see brigade.
You can grow salvias in large containers, just keep an eye on the watering and don't overdo it. I take my cuttings any time between the end of July and the middle of September and l use multi purpose compost mixed with vermiculite. They do say to take non flowering shoots but that can prove almost impossible so l just take the flower stalk off. As to rooting powder, l do use it, but l suspect they'd root just as easily without.

I love the blues, esp salvia guanajuato but not hot lips.

Thanks for letting me know, I do so like that Hot Lips variety. Perhaps I will look for one to plant next year.

Can I ask if the large containers have to be deep rather than wide? (Or both)?
