I am another Salvia nut !  I grow my collection in large pots so I can shift them around.  I bring them into the shelter of the house wall in winter but I always take cuttings as insurance.   Plant the cuttings touching the side of the pot- it always works for me.

I have a salvia called Bumble Bee which is a bit of a show stopper, bought, of course, on impulse. What other way is there to get salvias?

I did take cuttings and at the moment the flowers are all red.  Hopefully that will change through time.

Isn't this weather glorious!  I am sitting feet up on the patio and it is baking hot.  Didn't realise how glorious it was while I was at work! Just as well really. image

I have just bought a hot lips salvia which had lovely red lips when I planted it 5 days ago.  However the red lips have now gone - can anyone explain why please.

Hi Mercy, that's what it does

I bought mine a few weeks age from Homebase, and it was pink all over, I thought Oh well, I will have it anyway it's very pretty. a few days later it was the colour I was expecting!

it has since been mostly white!

  • I read somewhere the light levels will affect the colour,

if we have a hard winter you could loose them remember to take cuttings for next year, I've just done mine and if you don't need them you've got some to give to friends.

I was given 2 earlier this year. Following exhaustive efforts to find someone who'll take them off me, I've dumped them in the compost bin.

I could live with all white, or all red, but not the red/white combo.

Each to there own Hostafan I love mine,

  • Can you grow these from seed, and if so, would anyone like to send me some at the appropriate time please? I will pay or return the gesture.

I don't think they're propagated from seeds, but they are incredibly easy to take cuttings from, and widely available as plants. So you could ask a friend for some cuttings or buy a donor plant quite easily.

I seem to have gone a bit crazy with the Salvias this year, unable to decide on a colour I've gone for Dyson's Gem, Lavender Dilly Dilly and an intense purple type, all of which I've taken masses of cuttings from. Also of the big herbaceous types, Love and Wishes, and Amistad.
