Think they're all hibernating round here. Bitterly cold and frozen ground, so I hope so, as they'd have no chance of digging anything up at the moment. I havenlt seen any signs for a little while anyway.
Lovely pic Anni, and what brilliant work the rescue centres do. I checked after asking you about your centre, but we don't seem to have one anywhere near here. There's a general wildlife centre, but not one just for hogs. Every little donation helps too.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Hi Fairygirl, l think the nearest one l could find to you is the Forth Hedgehog Hospital, which isn't exactly down the road ! As you say every little helps
Yes - not very near me Anni! About an hour and a half's drive on a good day.
It wuld be tricky keeping one alive going that far, unfortunately. I hope I'm never in that position, but there's a wildlife place in Gateside which would take me about an hour to get to if I was desperate.

We are so lucky here Fairygirl - our general animal rescue is just 25 mins. drive away - just as well as we have taken 4 hogs there in the past couple of months. They also care for cats/dogs/birds etc. as well as having 3 baby seals who need round the clock care at the moment as they cannot feed themselves yet.
Slightly late with this, but there is a programme on Channel 5 tonight and the next 2 nights "Animals after dark", including yes, hedgehogs ! Steve Backshall is visiting Vale Wildlife Hospital with over 300 hogs in residence. Also on Channel5 +1 at 9pm.
Oh we missed that AnniD, watching The Nile instead. However I would have preferred this programme - at least we can watch it on catch-up tomorrow. Thanks for alerting us to it.
A Facebook post from Hedgehog Bottom Rescue, for your info.
never thought in my wildest dreams I would need to post this but events over the past week or so make me think I need to.
We work mainly with a wild, protected, species of hedgehog. These animals are covered under the Wildlife Act and the Animals Act. We take them in, we fix them and then, as the law states, we send them back to the wild.
Although they are in decline in the UK they are not endangered. They are not on the IUCN Red Lists and, therefore, we do not need zoos in various random countries attempting to buy hedgehogs off us for a so called 'breeding programme' which smacks more of being an added attraction for zoo visitors, especially as hedgehogs are not native to that country.
They are NOT for sale.
Nor will we sell them on as an exotic species to people living in the Americas to keep as pets or breed for profit for a number of reasons:
1. There is no way you would ever get an export licence for a protected species. 2. They are not native to your country 3. Most US States have banned ownership of hedgehogs 4. They are in short supply here, where they should be, so why would we send them to you? That is not going to help the indigenous population.
The British Hedgehog Preservation Society has sent out a message to all rescues on their lists saying this is not acceptable. If anyone hears of anybody in the UK trying to sell and/or export wild hedgehogs please let us know and we will get Wildlife Crime onto them.
Sell hedgehogs, as my Dad would say "whatever next". This is awful and surely must be banned by law. If there is a way to make money people will do it - we hear of such vile acts being committed to make money, and this is so sad, poor defenseless creatures.
I know - I often feel the same as you do AnniD. We must all try to spread a bit of love and tolerance in our daily lives. It helps me to feel that I am doing some good then it will spread to others too. A smile, a helping hand or a good deed all give me a feeling of faith and hope.
