We have not seen ours for a few weeks. Still leave a little food in the protected crate.
I hope "ours" is tucked up snug somewhere. Not in our garden that I have noticed, though we do keep a little overgrown spot it is probably not quiet enough.
Just a little dish of biscuits, I do not like to leave them un-fresh. But not sure how often to change them?
There are a few slugs about, not enough to clear the dish but the odd trail. So the biscuits are dry and not mouldy. Been changing them about five days apart.
    Any input please?
I do not want to leave a lot of food lying around. But it is so mild the hogs may come calling.

Water is always fresh and available at ground level.
  • I don't think you can do anything more Rubytoo.  There are still a few slugs which the hog may eat although ours don't appear to eat them at all.  If the biscuits are still good after a few days then I think changing them after 5 is reasonable. Do you give the dish shelter from the rain?
About an hour ago we were sat inside when a tiny hedgehog came looking through the French windows.  It was one of the smallest we have had this year, easily fitted in the palm of my hand. (Sorry no picture.)  I scooped it up and it was taken to the Animal Rescue centre to overwinter.

Thanks @Guernsey Donkey2  Yes we have a plastic crate upside down with hog sized hole, the biscuits keep nice and dry.

I do not think our hogs like slugs much either. But I think they might eat the snails sometimes.

Shame on you no photo of ickle hog, seriously though, it is so nice you have a good rehab/rescue locally and taken them there. :)

That sounds okay to me as well Rubytoo, if the biscuits are not soggy or mouldy they should be fine. Just maybe put out fewer biscuits for a while  :). It has been comparatively mild Guernsey Donkey, so I'm not surprised that your little hog was out and and about. Of all the hedgehogs at my local rescue, 57 are wide awake and only 6 are hibernating at the moment !

Thanks too @AnniD,  only putting a small amount out good plan, figure I would see them gone and also the poops around, messy little souls, so could refill with a few more if they are active, every little helps, but no Christmas pud :)

Happy Christmas to all hedgehog lovers, and all those who run rescues etc. May you all have a peaceful time.
  • We keep some biscuits in the dish in the feeding station and check every day ... they'd not been eaten for about a week but they were all gone this morning ... I've refilled.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • What a beautiful picture AnniD, thank you for your kind wishes and may I echo the same sentiments to all the contributors to this Hedgehog thread, it is lovely to share our experiences.
Let's hope that along with the festivities and celebrations we like to share this Christmas that the hedgehog visitors to our gardens are not forgotten.
