@NannaBoo, that is horrendous. And just to leave it there like that, what is wrong with people? Hopefully no children saw it. At least you have tried to do the right thing and educate them, which is all you can do in a case like this. Hopefully it died instantly and didn't suffer. I am so sorry you that you had to see that.
AnniD, It was on the lawn not the edge so I dought it died instantly which is terrible. I was speaking to my son at lunch time and he said it could have been one of the babies that we had in the garden under the slab from it's size. Why don't people check there gardens they know their about, five minutes is all it take to see if one is about. There are children up there but on the other side of the road and I dought they would be able to see it as the hedges is in the way which for the children's sake is good. I'm thinking about putting up a notice asking people to check before the string or use the mowers. They already think I'm mad round here due to the hog houses and feeding station but who cares if that's what they think of me.
I am not surprised you felt physically sick @NannaBoo what an awful thing to happen to such a lovely creature. How can people be so cruel?
I am sure you are right, but also it could have been disturbed, or injured and then attacked by crows - we found three hoglets that had been attacked by crows, 2 of them died and the 3rd was nursed back to life by our local rescue centre. I do hope they give hedgehogs and other creatures some thought next time.
Guernsey Donkey2, I let them a note but will that take any notice. When I know they are in I'll take a look and see if they have removed it if not I bring it back here and bury it, can't leave the poor thing there overnight.
NannaBoo, it could have been yours that you were feeding but they do travel a long way.
Last year i found one on the front lawn, it had been dead for a long time. Don't want to go into detail it suddenly turned up don't know where it came from so i buried it in the border.
I've been thinking of making another feeding station, we had the 3 together and there wasn't much room for them.
Logan4 I'll never know for sure if it was one of the one's we were feeding but I'll still keep on feeding them I have one feeding station on the Patio in a corner, one on the lawn and one down where I keep my pots. The hog house's are all scattered around in the shrubbery that stays green all year along with the Elephant Ears. I also have bird boxe, one each on two sides of the garage, three on three side of the house and the old man over the back to me gave me permission to put one up on his tree, we also have 5 bird baths around the garden. Picked up some secondhand mugs from the charity should and have started to make three bug or bee houses. I want to encourage as much wildlife to my garden as I can, I would love to live in the country but as I can't I'll bring as much into my garden as I can which is now being pulled to bits so I can have what I want now and no the HO as he's gone.
@NannaBoo, if you know them well enough to know how they would react, it may be worth following up face to face. As Hexagon says, it may not have been anything to do with them, and it gives them a chance to put their side of the story and clear the air. If you know that they wouldn't react well, l suppose we'll never know what happened. Did you need to rescue it ? I hope not.
Couldn't get up the last night so have just come back. They said they didn't think it was hurt that bad and would put it in the waste bin. I asked if the would mind if I took it a buried it in my garden and after telling them why I wanted to bury it they agreed so it is now wrapped in a J cloth and in a quiet corner in my garden. I'm sorry to say this but they didn't seem worried that they had injured and killed it. It may have been just a hedgehog to them but to me it was as if the had committed hit and run. I'm sorry if someone on here think I was in the wrong but if people aren't told of the damage they do to our wild life they wont take more care in the future.
@NannaBoo, you did your best, and that's all you can do. I know some people couldn't care less, but we are all different. Maybe next time they just might think before they start cutting. I know some people might think it's soppy and pathetic, but at least you are giving that small creature a peaceful final resting place, and l thank you for that
AnniD It's all I could do for the poor thing but it is in a lovely spot in the garden, it doesn't look much at the moment but next year it will pretty. I wasn't rude to him but felt I had to make my point but was upset when he said he'd put it in the wheelie bin. Son dug the hole and he/she is now at rest. I never want to see something like that again. Thanks for understanding why I'm so upset over this.
