I had a load of pallet wood taking up space so about 12 months ago I decided to make some bird boxes, I ended up making 6 various bird boxes and a hedgehog box, two bird boxes went to the allotment one of which blue tits built a nest in, I also took the hedgehog box up there not that I have ever seen sign of a hedgehog on the allotment but it seems like an ideal place for them to be. I checked the other day and there's no sign of hogs being in the box so I pulled some dry grass and put it into the box maybe it will be used this winter fingers crossed.
  • I hope you are rewarded with a little prickly friend in the hog box soon barry island.  We put some straw in our hog box but the hogs seem to prefer a natural home - either under old leaves and brambles that aren't disturbed from one year to the next or under logs or some other old wood, again undisturbed.

I am still completely bereft of hedgehogs after years of them visiting every night and sleeping in the hog house by day.Still put food out and keep the hog house 'hedgehog ready'.
They must be about somewhere but not yet found my place.

  • I nevrn thought about helping hedgehogs as we have a small syburban garden surrounded by fences. We found evidence this year that one spent some time in our garage though so it's something I'm thinking about

I haven't looked in here for a while - so apologies.
I hope there's a happy explanation for those who haven't got their hogs visiting any more  :(
Bookmonster - I knew there were hogs around here when I  moved in 5 years ago, but as the road next to me is populated by idiots who drive too fast, I was concerned about them getting in to the garden, as I figured they would be crossing from the good habitat nearby. This July however, a little family turned up [mum and two babies] so I felt I had to do something and keep encouraging them. The dry ground meant that their natural food was in short supply, and they were out during afternoon/early evening, so we fed them and kept an eye on them until the rain returned, they could forage more, and weren't appearing in daylight. They still visit here every night, and I've fed them with hog biscuits and made a proper house for them. Yetserday I bought some hay to add to the dried leaves in there. Fingers crossed it's an inviting nest for the winter  :)
I always have water available in a dish for them, as well as the accessible pond. I've also made a small tunnel under the side fence so that they can get from front to back - they had already made little tunnels in two places under the front fences to get in there. Anything you can do to help them is great. If you're on good terms with neighbours, you can ask them to make the little gaps under fences so that they can travel around safely from garden to garden. Leave a little untidy area here and there, and make a bit of cover for them to hide in safely.   :)
I was just saying on another thread that I took a pic of their little 'pathway' along the grass,  from the front corner where they come in, heading  round the side of the house  to the back garden :)

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

After saying I have no hedgehogs at the moment I have just heard that a chap not 300yds from my house has 5!  :o
Nice to know they are still close by but cannot think why I am getting no visits after so many years.

You know what they say m.penguin - a change is as good as a rest  ;)
    Little b*ggers  :D
Perhaps they're getting enough to eat by the time they get to yours, so not needing to come in.

  • I love your little hedgehog tracks fairygirl - perhaps one night you could keep a watch for them making their way to your feeding area - you are doing all the right things and are being justifiably rewarded with their visits.
Madpenguin can the hogs get into your garden easily - are you putting food and water out to encourage them in?
We have had two youngsters as well as the more mature hogs this week - one of the small ones had to be taken to the rescue centre as it had tics and was really too small for this time of year - the other young one eats a hearty meal each night.
