What a lovely thread,  thank you Wonky. The pictures are wonderful. Here's the one I'm using as my hopeful lock screen image at the moment:

  • Hazel, Sweet Rocket is usually thought of as a short-lived perennial but my clump has been there for five years and is increasing in size and self-seeding.  It's a bit like perennial wallflowers in habit (and is related to them).  It has a big flush of flowers in late spring/early summer and then I cut it back and it continues to flower intermittently through the summer and early autumn.  There were even a couple of little flowers on it on New Year's Day!  I'll cut it back fairly hard any week now when the weather begins to pick up and leave it to get on with things.  The night-flying pollinators just love it.

There is a lilac-pink version too.
