What kind of apples and pears GWRS? Hope you enjoy your holidayđ You seem to go away a lot? Or is that my imagination? I don't have a Wilko near me that I'm aware of... The only seeds I want or need for next year so far are beetroot. I seem to have an awful lot left from this year and have collected flower seed from the garden, stuff that will germinate outside.
Perki, thanks for dropping by. It's rare for me to damage an allium bulb beyond repair but many I have bought do not come back year after year. Think I only have half a dozen reliable types. That said I am buying some new types again this year.
I think beetroot leaves should be able to be cooked like spinach but I don't have the capability.đ
I took on a half plot 3 years ago. Very enjoyable but hard work. Use Geoff Hamilton Guide to Organic Gardening advice my handbook. Have third under fruit and rest divided into 3 main areas for crop rotation greens, roots and peas/beans plus a few permanent features like asparagus and Jerusalem Artichoke. More or less self sufficient in spuds, onions and soft fruit. Have jars of jam and bottles of wine and spirits,a Rumtopf ,a full freezer and have now bought a dehydrator to extend the range of preserving. It's addictive be warned x

Thanks for your post Tessagardenbarmy, most inspiring!
I'm in the early days of deciding what I like and what best to use the space for. I've never heard of Rumtopf and have just looked it up - what a brilliant idea! I'm going to get myself one as a present. Do you need the weight stones? I've seen them for sale with and without...Â
Vic , hello , Rumtopf was very fashionable many many years ago , Quite often you see them in Charity shop , still got ours in the Loft đ· O/H reminded me next doors Rabbits like beetroot leavesÂ
Hello @Victoria Sponge. Got my Rumtopf from a charity shop. As a previous post said they have definitely gone out of fashion. I didn't have any weights with mine. Just push it down with a wooden spoon  None of my family like it so I've made a small amount this year for me. You can use the liquor as a drink a bit like a sloe gin. It maybe full of rum, sugar and fruit so not the healthiest I like it with natural yoghurt.Â
Hi @GWRS . Still getting to grips with dehydrator I have a separate post on the forum asking for advice. First go was a disaster too many different crops and too wet. Some you have to blanch first and you really need to dry them off before using dehydrator . So far have tried drying borlotti beans, tomato slices now stored in jars with oil and latest is apple rings. Just waiting to see how well they store have had problems with mould before when I have done oven drying.
Hi @GWRS. I have vine dried, sunny window dried, airing cupboard, oven dried and have now tried a dehydrator . Problem had been mould in the storage jaroom.Â
