Good idea to go for two slim waterbutts, brambles are good if that is the edge of the allotments good to keep out people with the brambles and fruit taste nice
I went to the allotment yesterday too bit of digging for me
Dug a redcurrant out the front garden today and carried it up to the allotment, it will free up some planting space for some nice new things The allotment is starting to look smaller the more planting I do...
Carved out an area for a flowerbed as I want to shift some linaria out of a bed in the garden. I'm not expecting much from the fruit this year but I would like to boost the bees as much as possible for future years. To that end I'm planting up a lot of good bee plants and will sow annuals also.
Did some more litter picking. This weekend I've disposed of a bag of glass, one bag of cans and glass jars, one of milk cartons and one of general litter. Recycling bin is about full so may have to leave it for now...what do gardeners need all this stuff for? All I can think of is putting a container on top of a stick to support a fruit net maybe? There's a heck of a lot though
Victoria - the one consolation is that the rubbish will be gone soon and then you can really enjoy the allotment in spring and summer. Maybe even have time to sit back
Glass Jar I have a fe on plot use them ike GWRS does on the forum to put slug pellets in helps them keep dry, mik cartons may of been for peoples drinks tea/ coffee from portable cooker kettle in sheds from other plots or unless filled milk bottle with water to hold plastic sheeting down as they are not round should stay still
Nice you moved your fruit bush to allotment - someone from my allotment site gave me a cutting of a jostaberry - cross between gooseberry and blackcurrant so going to try that this year
As you put on the flowerday count thread from Wearside, is that Sunderland cause Rachael is from there in youtube video as I noticed from the lable on the fruit tree delivery shed got
Started watching the videos from Rachael she is a good Youtuber
That is a nice video, Gardengirl, thank you I'm not far from Sunderland, inbetween there and Durham. Does that mean hen coops have to be covered with a waterproof cover now? I know there was a bird flu scare before Xmas...
I think you are correct about the milk cartons - they must have been used as a weight for something as they were all the largest size and when I opened the lids to flatten them none stank of milk...The guy before me seemed to have smashed the bases off of jars, wedged the top half in the ground and planted things inside the rim. To be fair, just because the stuff has ended up on my patch doesn't mean it belonged to the previous holder, it could be anyones.
I like Rachael's idea about the plastic squares - brilliant! I'd been wondering what to do about pathways between beds/fruit bushes and that seems perfect.
Amy280 I look on Gumtree a lot got a free green house if I took it down, still flat pack in garden waiting for a space at allotment when I decide where it will go, also got some water buts one that was no cracked ,fixed the one that craked
Amy280 yo going to have hens or got them?
Lot to look at on gumtree and be quick if you want a GH as it took me a few attempts with different free GH to be first to get one
There are 20 plots at my site, all side by side, I'm no 18. Either side both sites are maintained.
I wanted to put up a bird feeding station at the allotment but have been advised not to because of rats. My feeling is that the site already has rats because of the chickens, ducks and piles of junk...? I'll build a pond/bath eventually and let the birds eat some of my fruit harvest
Took up my other currant bush today and planted it in the line up:
Don't know if it's seeable but I've got the currants and a gooseberry in a line between the brick path and the blue poles.
New bits of growth on my Apple tree stick (broadholme beauty), blackberry and some rasp canes?
Prepped some stuff for the tip tomorrow:
Will try and take plastic, metal and sofa cushions tomorrow. Will probably have to make another trip with the giant glass shards, bags for landfill and the hazardous pile.
I'm thinking of digging up my summer rasps out the garden and taking them up. They are Glen Coe. Does anyone know when is an okay time (I was thinking next week) and as it is growing as a single plant, is it possible to create canes by splitting it up? I don't even know if this is a stupid question...
Some interesting points there aym, thanks for making me muse and question myself
I've drawn a plan with an outline of where I want things to be but it is an ideas list rather than a rule list:
The other thoughts I have are:
It must look nice or I will get no enjoyment from it - hence the hasty clearing of junk
I don't use weedkiller or pesticides (although I have nothing against those who do) so I expect variable results and the need to create balance
I've decided my Allotment is going to be a lines and measurements design because my garden is the opposite
I don't know if I'm a dig or no dig gardener ? I don't align myself with a school of thought but I will say no dig as I would dig a hole to plant something or get out some weed roots but that would be it.
I'm going to bounce off the sides like a pinball and see what is created along the way. It's fun, not a chore

I got a bird feeding station does wellith the birds
Victoria Sponge Have you been to your allotment plot?
How many plots on your site?
