Thanks Hazel. I really don't do much more than water them. I think it's the hot dry weather that does it.

Looking good Pat. Summer doesn't seem quite so far away now   image

How do you stop your lettuce bolting in the heat? Or do you keep it somewhere cooler - is that even possible in your summers!  Mine was even bolting two years ago when we had a warmer summer. Or just 'summer', as most people would call it   image

You'll be a good bit warmer than I was on Sunday image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I agree, Pat - that's a wonderful reminder of summer for those of us in the grip of winter.  Beautiful roses.  I'll look up your jigsaws soon; I've already enjoyed doing the ones you made of your colouring patterns!  image

I grew the lettuce from seed and then moved them to small pots and I keep them on the front veranda for convenience of picking at meal times. That means that they are shaded for all day except for early morning ( and also the pests haven't found them yet). image

Liri, I'm glad you are enjoying the puzzles. I've enjoyed the ones that you put on too. I only found the new flower ones yesterday. image

Some of my flower ones are more difficult than I intended - easier with fewer pieces...

Obelixx, I can recommend the Pokers for a neglected sunny corner that you dont want to have to keep working on. They simply look after themselves. They also have a range of colour combinations.image

  • I agree with you Pat, we have a couple of Poker plants at the end of our driveway, mixed in with Monbretia (orange) and a few foxgloves - we hardly ever need to work on that area - they all muddle up together.

Your pictures are gorgeous, all those lovely colours.  I too wonder how you prevent the lettuce from bolting as ours do in hot weather.  Are they specially bred to cope with the excessive heat?

Nothing special GD2. Some of them are minionette and the others are purple and/or green oak leaf lettuce. I think they like being on the veranda under the roof with only the easterly morning sun getting to them directly, then the rest of the day muted heat/light. They are still fairly young, but I pick off leaves regularly for the table.

Strangely, I was thinking about Montbretia and or Crocosmia for bright colour for Obelixx as well. Our TV is currently playing back episodes of Gardeners World, and in yesterday's epispode, Carol was visitong a man who was growing/breeding Crocosmia and they looked lovely and bright.  Anyway, I'm sure she'll work it out herself when she's got the house organised.

glad you liked my flowers. image
