We have two cats and they definitely respond to their own names. It's true, there's always a suffix but we do this with small children as well, often. Perhaps it's affection. My pets are accustomed to silly names and endearments as well as their proper names and don't seem to despise me.
Many years ago I had a black half-Burmese. We called him Barnabas (not sure why). Then a year later he had kittens! After that we called her Barnapuss. Her son, who was identical, was called Nimba - a mountain range in Africa. Again I can't remember why but there must've been a reason

My cats were always (slightly) food related. Peanut and Biscuit and Pickle and Lily. These only came along after Smokey and Tigger - who were not food related.

I like truffle as well but neighbours cat is called trouble so too close. Truffle would be lovely for a girl.
I may be getting a girl kitten in a few weeks so am keeping the girly names aside.

This is my second hobby now - thinking up names! If you are having a girl as well - maybe you would like names which complement or fit together?
Do cats respond to their names?? Surely it's the 'call' and your voice - so don't discount Truffle yet!

Most of my cats have had names ending in an - o or an - ie.
