I'm going to make a bird box this weekend to put on my 5ft fence. Is it too late? Should I make a open one for robins or one with a small hole for the tits ?
Obelixx, can you get bird food mail order? Certainly in England we are spoiled for choice with numerous online suppliers. I make my own bird cake using chopped peanuts which I buy on line, and grind very small in my food processor. I mix it with an equal weight of melted beef suet, with additional dried mealworms if I feel like it, then set it in blocks or cylinders.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
Obelixx, do you you have a Gamm Vert GC up your way? Ours has just had a new delivery of fat blocks and peanuts and this year is the first time they have been selling shelled sunflower seeds!
Thanks Floralies. There are a couple within striking distance. have to say they're the worst in terms of pots, compost and plants but I'll happily check out their bird feed range. I found the shelled sunflower seeds in small packs in France Agricole.
Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.

Meant to say - if I mix shop-bought suet blocks with home made in the feeder, the home made variety always gets eaten first...
Giddy - do both but place them apart as the two don't mix.
Liri - yes, I have been looking online. Fat balls with insects but no peanuts so far. Will keep looking.

On line there is Vivara but they are expensive.

Obelixx - thanks for your reply. I bought two boxes in the end.
