No chance of eating out side today, only 2° this morning, 5° by lunchtime, grey and windy. The odd shower.

Stockton on the famous BBC Tees is dull today, you get so used to it being sunny it comes as a shock, at least it is not raining though it may have done overnight, colder though.

G.D. Stationed at Bordon on an engineering course we got every week end off, no chance of going home as the train from London took nine hours. We had a group of Eastenders who took me home with them I got bed board and beer, they would not let me put my hand in my pocket. I was taken to the jellied eel shop, the best thing you will ever taste, I took a mouthful, the biggest mistake I ever made. Spit it out? no they will be upset, just be sick? no, in the end I ran for the toilet and it was half and half, my breakfast came up as well. When I got back they laughed it off saying it is an acquired taste. Those families had nothing yet were the jolliest people I ever met. When we got to Catterick I returned the favour, Mother had bodies on truckle beds all over the house. Lovely people all.

    Frank.

PS, the sun suddenly lit the room up, sneaked up on me.

Well the rain arrived yesterday afternoon. Not enough to fill an egg cup let along a water butt. Hardly even made the patio wet.it is now overcast but dry.

  • Same here Sussexsun, no measurable rain in the past 20+ days, it is becoming quite dire in our garden, thankfully no hosepipe ban yet - the island reservoir is still fairly full.

Sunny again all day so far, no sign of clouds, a cool wind but not cold by any means.

Sounds to me like you were having the time of your life in Bordon Frank - it has left a fond impression on your memory to this day.  Jellied eels wouldn't be on my top 100 favourite foods either - it is an acquired taste, just as conger eel soup is too.

Had quite a bit of rain the day before yesterday. Cold now, frosts today and yesterday. -2° at the moment. Dahlias were coming up outside have now been frosted. Everything was about 2 weeks in advance because of the hot weather and now some of it looks miserable. i though primulas were hardy but their flowers have drooped.

G.D. Bordon is part of my history, I was there many times either at SEME (school of electrical and mechanical engineering) or getting our war chest for the move abroad and returning it when we got back. I saw Bordon and Longmoor Garrison from it being a large Canadian Garrison to virtually nothing but the school, I had a permanent bed at Martinique barracks, before they knocked it down of course. From the Bordon Bullet a little old single line railway my first visit, to luxury coach and once helicopter. One of our Lady gardeners lives in that area. Believe it I could write a book about Bordon.

Stockton on Tees is sunny and warm for now, I think we had rain late last night. The plants and lawns which were cut yesterday are pristine, just enough sun and then rain it seems.

  • When people have these fantastic memories which often stay with them all their lives - just as my parents did from WWII, it is a great pity that they usually don't write them down.  There are so many questions I wish I had asked my parents of the time they spent in service (for my mum the best years of her life apparently and Dad never wanted to speak about his horrific time in Burma) - so I urge you to write them down Frank.

It is lovely here - no wind, quite mild and no rain, although there was a short sharp shower last night - still not enough to fill a water butt though.
