Dahlias

  • My Bishop of Llandaff dahlias have done well, very well. I planted the tubers in pots, which get a max of about 5 hours full sunshine a day. I feed them once a week approx. and dead head every other day. I think I have been lucky with them - one didn't grow at all, so got 2 out of 3. I like the colour and the fact that the bees like them too. I will try them again next year and also a packet of Bishop's Children seed which I have just ordered.imageThese Ball Fushions were good too but don't attract the bees.imageIf your dahlia produces the flowers when everything around is finishing off - that is a bonus for autumn colour wakeshine.

  • Thanks Guernsey..I hope they do carry on for a while. That's a fab photo of Bishop of L with a bee on it! Your ball fusion one has a lovely pleasant colour. Bees have been going to my ball dahlias as you can see some of the balls have opened up quite a bit.

  • I love your red pompom dahlias wakeshine - red is my colour and they are more open than mine - I will have to select any new dahlais more carefully next year, but we are so limited at the local GC's here - I may end up buying online, although I do like to support local wherever possible.

  • Thanks Guernsey. Actually photos from my phone always come out a little overexposed with slightly more enhanced colours. The below photo, with my SLR, is nearer to the true colour of that pompom and it's more of a deep purple/claret/wine colour....

Well online is a good option I think. My local GC didn't have many dahlias at all this year. I think I am going to buy some tubers online for next year too as they're cheaper than the full plants and I don't want multiple variety packs as I've had this year. I have already so many I want to get, I need to try and whittle down the list!

  • Yes, the lists do get longer as the winter progresses - more time to scan the internet in those darker evenings. I am limiting my self to less pots and tubs next year - it is the watering that takes the time isn't it, especially when there is so much else to do in the garden in the summer.

  • I have just received a packet of Bishop's Children Dahlia seeds and was surprised to read that they can grown up to 32 inches tall.  I had imagined them to be half that height - but thinking about it both my children are taller than me......  I wonder how they will cope in our windy garden.
