Aym280, I am always breeding plants for the fun of it, here is two photos of a Pelargonium that I bred. I did sent it off to be inspected by a seed company but they said it was too similar to ones already on the market but it does be fun doing it as you never know what you get from doing it.
Thanks Wakeshine, It does look like a peony rose but when you breed anything that belongs to the rose family, you just never know what you end up with. It was a nice surprise but I see how the trials go first and if they want it as I hope they do. I would love to have it out there as it would be nice to name a rose after a family member.
Michael the geranium you bred is beautiful. Do you sell them privately? I don't understand why a seed company wouldn't want it, I haven't seen one like that with so may frills.
Aym280, I have always enjoyed doing that since I was a boy. I started with polyanthus, a friend of my father saw them (as they were nearly black in colour as I crossed an old dark (unknown) red variety with a new dark purple-ish blue) and when their offspring were in flower he wanted them. I foolishly gave all of them away, kicking myself ever since but I spend my spare time as I say messing in the garden over the years.
I just like breeding plants, I once got the skin and colour of a Garden Peach tomato onto the size and shape of a Black Russian tomato and it was orange but it had a nice taste. But it took as long as a Black Russian to ripen. I sent those seeds away as well, as the seeds from those plants were from a few years of self pollination as F1 hybrids are not stable, it takes a second and a third year to see what they would be like. It is a game of time and curiosity. Another tomato I bred all had a thing like a finger sticking out of them, funny looking but breeding does that as you get freaks and mutants sometimes.
I think the key to breeding is to have enough space to grow all the seeds you get from what you are breeding and enough pots lol. The thing is with gardening it seems each gardener has a few plants that they could never do without and breeding them seems the most fun to do. Aren't hellebores a bit difficult to breed because they can so easily cross breed with any hellebore, so it takes more work to make sure you get what you want and then there are the nice accident lol.
Wakeshine, I was told it was too similar to others out there but it does have a day glow red to it with hints of purple, sometimes the digital cameras can't pick that slight hint up sometimes. It is a F2 variety I bred, I am delighted with it but pity it was deemed too similar to others on the market but that is life.
I wouldn't sell it incase I broke some law as selling new plant species might lead to an headache for me and then if someone bought it and then said they bred it, where would that leave me? Such is life but it is nice lol.
Well, the Rose (By any other name!!) is gorgeous, I love love rugosas, have them all along our back fence by the veg plot, does anyone on here no, is there a yellow one, I have pink and white. Your geranium is also gorgeous. Wouldnt it be great if someone could breed a fully hardy one. Could you get by the selling thing, by maybe charging "packing and post" unamed variety, just a thought (maybe only because I would like them)
Selling plants could open a box of trouble with licences / passports and then the tax man? I should look into it further myself and get a knowledge base from that and try a few other seed / plant companies I think?

Thanks aym280, I see what happens as you never know what is around the corner
Yeah I don't see why you can't try other companies
seems like you can only buy the yellow rugosa in the states!
