Rose

Hi,

I was curious and wanted to know if a Rosa rugosa hybrid that I bred looks like a decent rose or if it is too rough looking for a rose, it looks more like Peony rose instead and it has no hips but has a sweet sent. I am curious to know thanks.

The second photo was taken by a camera phone, so a bit dull.

    Very nice. Call it 'Shaggy'.

  • Looks good from here, Michael, does it have the rugosa scent ?

I reckon you need plant breeder's rights on that one, Michael.  Especially if it's scented...  image

Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
  • I think its lovely, I would have it in my garden any day.

  • Thanks aym280, I have bred this years ago probably 2008/9 but I am always breeding just for the fun of it as it is a cheap way to get more plants for nothing. I normally just breed tomatoes and Polyanthus but decided to try roses just for the fun of it, really for curiousity.                                                                              So I collected the seeds of the roses and stuck them into a pot that I left out over winter. So by Spring there was a rose growing in the pot and I decided to keep it to see what the flower was going to be like.

Thanks Richard Hodson, It has an old rose sweet smell, but it is not as strong as I would like it to be based on the cross that I used but yet in hot weather it does be a good sweet old rose fragrance. It never produces any hips although in hot weather it does produce pollen.

Thanks Ladybird4, nice photo as well. I like the redish pink rugosas myself and then when the hips get ripe they turn transparent, that is when the birds start to eat the flesh and seeds then but it can drive the poor bumble bees mad lol.

    Thanks Wakeshine.

Thanks Toxicdrip, I think I will call it after a family member, not too sure if that is a good way to name roses. I have to think about it as it is with a reliable rose breeder at the moment to value it, so heres hoping?

Thanks Liriodendron, I have it with a reliable rose breeder now for evaluation, if they see merit in it then we will see. Fingers cross, I just asked out of curiosity here and I have a bit of self doubt but it will take a few years to know if it is any good?

Nutcutlet, I won't give too much away but it is an old Gallica type rose. Not being rude just careful in a public forum.

Thanks Tina, I have mine in a pot as it does produce a few root suckers, only 2 or 3 per year but that is rugosa's nature I believe.

You dont even have to say anything about it being a rugosa hybrid, you could just call it a scented peony rose...whatever you call it, it doesn't matter, it looks fabulous and I'd want one!
