I was thrilled to see a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker on my bird feeder yesterday. A first for me. I have had visits from the Greater Spotted fairly regularly over the years, thought the Lesser was a magpie at first. Fingers crossed it stays around.
I had a pair of Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers nesting in an old Ash tree, which I later found out had a completely rotten core, when it fell and destroyed two greenhouses! Hopefully, they aren't a portent in your case!
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
Sadly we do not have many tall trees around here which is where the Lesser Spotted prefers to nest and live. I looked them up and they are now endangered so it was a treat to see one. We do have telephone poles along a clay company railway line which I hear woodpeckers drumming when they are nesting and looking for food. Apparently, they only tend to visit gardens at this time of year, topping up their diet before disappearing into the tops of tall trees for the rest of the year. It reminded me of a zebra with its very smart black and white stripes and markings. Lovely.
This week we have seen the goldcrest, a blackcap, and a siskin. We knew the goldcrest lived here, but this is the first photo we have(taken through glass). The blackcap and siskin are new visitors. Then this morning the ducks have returned for the seventh year. They tend to hang around demanding to be fed for three months or so , then disappear for the rest of the year.
What a lovely picture of the goldcrest. Wish I had a camera suitable to get some photos. Our sunflower seed feeder is currently being hogged by Siskins, only seen them infrequently in past years but there is a small flock hanging around this spring.
