Seeds blow in, though maybe not hazelnuts birds drop them, as fidget says squirrels hide them. That link has a couple of posts on it and though it may be double dutch to you now, you can look up the terms and see how you can control the size of your plants. They can be used in hedging so you can keep them as small as you want. Maybe you could even let one or two grow up a bit depending on how much room you have to give you a wee bit of height.
