I have 2 Oleanders in large lots which I bought less than a year ago. They are in an unsheltered position and have dry and some partly brown speckled leaves. In April I cut them down to about a third, however I still can't see any new leaves or buds.

Is this normal and am I just impatient ? I never had any Oleanders before so don't have any experience with them.  Thank you for any hints.   Elsa

Good to keep a sense of humour when you have an unruly garden to deal with!

There's a nice Ophiopogon (black lily turf) lurking beside it anyway image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Sorry lisey - we're being very unhelpful - unlike everyone else who's ID ing the plant. image

I agree that it looks like Hazel though. I initially thought Beech, but the shape isn't quite right  image

I can't believe you just took all the words out of my keys!!! Exactly what I was going to say except that I was going to blame you for starting it. image

The question now is how many are you going to keep lisey, if any? They're lovely sturdy plants but they will get much bigger.

I'm not sure I have now found 7!!!!! 4 on the right side and 3 on the left. ....was thinking of maybe keeping one on each side or maybe two ???...not sure but there are a lot of them and they're just getting bigger and bigger.... Any thoughts???  image

Maybe just one on each side and dig the others up if they're going to take over?  Not sure how mum got so many of them! !!! She only ever got one of everything! !!

Seeds blow in, though maybe not hazelnuts image birds drop them, as fidget says squirrels hide them. That link has a couple of posts on it and though it may be double dutch to you now, you can look up the terms and see how you can control the size of your plants. They can be used in hedging so you can keep them as small as you want. Maybe you could even let one or two grow up a bit depending on how much room you have to give you a wee bit of height.

This link is the "go to" page for all our queries and IDs and things. Once you get the name of a plant, in this case Hazel, you can look it up and see what it's eventual height will be, what conditions it likes....etc
