I think the large echium you're referring to is Echium pinnifolium. They grow all over here in Cornwall in sandy soil.
In an area called Praa Sands they grow on the sandy, South facing banks like weeds. If you're concerned you could try lifting them carefully later in the year, pot them up and put them in a greenhouse or conservatory.
I've got Anemone Wild Swan in my garden, grows really well. I give it a mulch in the winter to help protect from the cold.
